FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1991

f prayers were made for it
to be cold recently, ice
carving entrants in
Michigan Winter Ice Festi-
val's Media Night premiere
ice carving competition sure
got their wish.
As one of the judges, I had
to be outside looking over the
works of art . . . One of the
gals inside lent me her gloves
and Wendy Rose gave me a
pair of earmuffs . . . But no-
body had insulated socks, so
my toes took on the feeling of
standing barefoot atop one of
those ice blocks.
The hot coffee I had in the
State Fair Coliseum warmed
my innards but they said it
would look tacky if I poured
some on my feet . . . so I
couldn't even enjoy the bevy
of hors d'oeuvres and desserts
that were competing (Opus I,
Van Dyke Place, Laurel
Manor, Les Auteurs, Golden
Mushroom, Charley's Crab,
Palace Grill, Savino's, etc.) .. .
This was the first year of the
Winter Ice Festival at
Michigan State Fairgrounds,
with big plans in store for
years to come.
The exhibits end this Sun-
day as dozens of snow and ice
carvers from around the
world show their stuff . . . and
the dining spots put their best
feet (unfrozen) forward with
food goodies.
It felt mighty good to get
my shoes off at home . . . and
even better discovering that
my toes were all still there.
ONLY THREE DAYS left
. . . today, tomorrow and Sun-
day . . . to get your La Pizza
Latina at either America's
Pizza Cafe . . . Telegraph,
south of 10 Mile, or the Fox
Theatre building downtown.
Remember . . . a portion of
the proceeds from my first-
place winner goes to help
Variety — The Children's
Charity, in its wonderful
work.
Eat . . . enjoy . . . and help.
If you can't get over or don't
eat pizza . . . do what Ben
"B.B." Bolton did . . . The un-
fortunate kiddies aided by
Variety will surely appreciate
your contribution.

CONGRATS . to Lee
Meyerson . . . on her birthday.
LET'S DISPELL all
rumors about Jim Sage .. .
He and wife Alia are still go-
ing strong at their Signature
Cafe in the Signature
Building, northeast corner of

11 Mile and Inkster . . . In
fact, starting today, they're
back with full-service, wait-
person, evening dining again
from 4 p.m. . . . It's still a
cafeteria during breakfast
and lunch . . . Their closing
was a temporary thing while
Jim concentrated on other
locations to expand.
THE SUPPORT group for
people with Charcot-Marie-
Tooth disease, one of the 40
muscular dystrophies, will
meet again Feb. 10 and is
seeking new members . . .
This is only the third meeting
. . . First one was with four
members . . . now there are
13.
Charcot-Marie-Tooth, nam-
ed after three doctors who
first reported the disease in
1886, affects abut 125,000
Americans . . . It is slowly
progressive, causing deterior-
ation of the peripheral nerves
which control sensory infor-
mation and muscle function
of lower legs and forearm
voluntary muscles.
Anyone interested in join-
ing the support group can call
Marlene Goodman, 661-4465.

"NOW THERE'S
a
knowledgeable food man,"
folks at Michigan the Boun-
tiful by City of Southfield and
Michigan Chefs de Cuisine
Association were saying
about the tall, handsome
gentleman at the Taste of
Seasons counter/booth. "And
so pleasant, too," they said.
The husband of Grace
Crowl, boss lady at Taste of
Seasons on Northwestern
Highway is Dr. James Crowl,
an internist at Providence
Hospital . . . They say that
behind successful men are
women . . . Well, here's James
. . . behind the very successful
Grace, who by the way, is a
registered nurse and at one
time ran the operating room
at Providence . . . Grace is
also a certified chef with a
master's in business.
Taste of Seasons took first
place this year in the table
decoration blue ribbon awar-
ding . . . Last year it was
Mark of Excellence.
Eli Robinson, Southfield Ci-
ty Council president, told of
starting the new year with an
omen of good luck . . . He had
four natural aces playing
poker while with wife Zelda
in Aruba . . . Madam Cleo
Aubin without a star on her
forehead, John Bloom (of
course), Shirlee and Jack
Iden, Lou DeCillis' staff at
Savino Ices making folks in-
terested by all eating ices at

the same time; Council-
woman Vicki Goldbaum
showing pictures of daughter
Rebecca's new little one, Sam
and Magene Richman,
Cheryl Pozulsny of Dearborn
Inn Mariott, saying for sure
she'll be in next year . . . This
was number four . . . Michi-
gan the Bountiful gets bigger
and better every year.
WHEN HIS children asked
if they could give Milt London
a 75th birthday party, he
almost raised the roof in a
loud, "No! I don't want
everyone knowing my age!
Besides, you never even gave
me a 50th."

Ice carvings and
desserts were a
cool mix.

Well, how about a 50th
then, asked the children .. .
and Milt said that sounded
better.
And so it was . . . a 50th
birthday party to celebrate
Milt's 75th . . . given by Dr.
Rick and Roberta London,
Leon and Leslie London and
his friend Diane Lerner.
It was held at Ritz-Carlton
Dearborn with collages of
special memories and me-
mentos in Milt's life, from
childhood to escorting Joan
Collins and Ann-Margaret
. . . Music for dancing was by
Martin Scot Kosins combo
and Larry Thompson sup-
plied the magic.
Milt has been a Variety
Club stalwart for many years
. . . and a lot of children join
his many friends in wishing
him a belated happy birthday.

MAIL DEPT.... "We were
entertaining our visiting
relatives recently at the Deli
Unique on Orchard Lake
Road. One of our guests found
a large piece of glass from one
of their dishes in his mouth
when he was eating his soup.
We had the manager come
over to show her the piece of
glass.
"It took her quite a while to
come to our table. When she
did, finally, she apologized,
but she did not offer to take
even the soup off of our bill!
Our guests wanted to go to
the deli because they can't get
the kind of good deli at home
that we have here. Or so we
thought.
"I wrote to Matt Prentice to
tell him of the situation, but
I never received an answer.
We have been patrons of the
