After the concert, one of the group asked the husband what he did for a living. "I am a housekeeper for an embassy, where my wife also gives piano lessons," the man replied. "It's terrible," Mr. Lessanework said. "Here we have all this talent . . . " Ethiopian Jews face a diff- erent dilemma, said Mr. Lessanework, who visited a number of absorption centers in Israel. They have little education and must adapt to a completely new way of life. "I'm especially concerned for the older generation," he said. "They have a hard time accepting the new life." Parents find themselves dependent on their children, who learn Hebrew quickly and can adjust to Israeli society. Furthermore, the family patriarch finds himself for the first time without a job, and parents are anxious about how easily their children may assimi- late. Mr. Lessanework said he often became a counselor for families trying to cope with the new Western culture. At the same time, younger Ethiopian Jews are finding success in the Israel Defense Forces, a new yeshiva for E- thiopian Jews is working to educate community leaders, and a number of Ethiopian Jewish immigrants are enrolled at Israel's top schools. Mr. Lessanework dis- agrees with critics who say the only way Ethiopian Jews can advance in Israeli socie- ty is if they are allowed more leniency in entering univer- sities. Ethiopian Jews, he said, must be held to the same educational standards as any other students. ❑ Top Line L to R: Sol Kleinman, Nathan Harris, Leon Halpern, Aaron Salzberg, Irving Altus.
