Two staff people have al-
ready volunteered to lead
the support group, Ms.
Wiener said. In an effort to
be flexible, a starting date
won't be set for the support
group until JFS talks to par-
ticipants.
In the past week, JFS has
had three requests for a
military support group, said
Ms. Weiner, who doesn't
know how many Jewish
families in Detroit have
relatives fighting in the war.
While three inquiries isn't a
large number, she believes
there may be more Jewish
families with relatives
fighting in the war who need
a support group.
"We need to reach out and
see if more people need it,"
Ms. Weiner said. "We're not
going to play the numbers
game. If there are eight such
families that's enough."
"We know what it is like to
be under stress and feel
helpless," she said. "We
have in the agency a lot of
intense experience working
with groups."
She also thinks there are
some Jewish concerns about
the war which people would
be more apt to share in a
primarily Jewish setting,
Ms. Weiner said.
The support group will ad-
dress the anxiety about not
knowing the status of loved
ones and the helplessness,
especially of parents who
have a child there, that they
can do little to protect them;
she said.
Those feelings of depres-
sion and anxiety are normal
among families left on the
homefront, Ms. Weiner said.
"We have to help people
know what they are feeling
and not be embarrassed
by it," she said. "People
need to deal with the situa-
tion. To say one needs help is
in no way any indication of
weakness."
Talking about their feel-
ings with others in a similar
position can help ease the
tension and make them feel
better, Ms. Weiner said. The
support group will also ex-
plore ways to channel their
feelings into practical ways
of helping the troops
overseas, she said.
"Sitting at home in front of
the TV will not ease people's
anxiety and depression
whereas doing something
will keep that anxiety and
depression under control,"
said Ms. Weiner, who knows
some people are afraid to
leave the television set be-
cause they think by wat-
ching they can somehow
help the troops.
"We need to help people
find ways to cope."
