Giant In-Store Renee Mutchnick: "We always thought the Cold War was our biggest threat." that happens to these guys," he said. "And what better way to know a man than to know what he does, which means flying with him." The pilots are bright, brave men, he said, "who joke about anything and everything. Of course you have to understand they know that every time they go out there they may not come back. Whenever they return they say, 'We beat death again.' " The pilots, in turn, have learned about Dr. Mut- chnick. "When the men see me out there they know they better be careful when they're talk- ing about Israel," he said. "They know I'm a strong supporter." The 108th meets one weekend each month for training and is deployed two weeks annually. Training sessions start at 4:30 a.m. Renee Mutchnick is mobility officer, overseeing the unit's readiness prepara- tions. Because the men and women can be called to ac- tive duty on 72 hours' notice, they must always have ready their medical history and names of beneficiaries. Mrs. Mutchnick, a captain with the Guard, also serves as medical readiness train- ing officer. Her respon- sibilities include dealing with all aspects of emergen- cies — everything from CPR training to understanding nerve agent antidotes. The unit's members are trained to serve under all circumstances, including a chemical war, she said. "We can come in anywhere, set up a tent and open shop," Dr. Mutchnick added. Despite the necessity to be ready to work at any time, Mrs. Mutchnick said the Gulf attack took many in the Air National Guard by sur- prise. "The toughest part of readiness was preparing the power of attorney, saying who would take care of our children if we were both ac- tivated," she said. Initially, the couple gave power of attorney to a family member, thinking it meant placing the children in her care for several days during a natural disaster. But as they considered the more serious possibilities posed by a war, the Mut- chnicks opted to name a permanent caretaker for their children. "We always thought the Cold War was our biggest threat," Mrs. Mutchnick said. "We never imagined this." El WAREHOUSE SALE! All furs labeled to show The Cold Michigan Winter Is Here. So Buy Now! JFS To Begin Military Family Support Group SUSAN GRANT Staff Writer ladys Hacker used to send packages filled with Tootsie Rolls, crossword puzzles and news- papers to her brother-in-law, Howard Blauer, a career Navy man stationed on the U.S.S. Mississippi in the Persian Gulf since August. But when war broke out last week, Mrs. Hacker learned from her sister-in- law, Adrienne, she could only send letters. She hopes the 11- ounce weight limit on letters will still allow her to stick a piece of gum in the envelope. Mailing packages was her way of showing support to G her brother-in-law and his family in Virginia Beach, Va., said Mrs. Hacker, who lives in Redford. "It makes me feel like I'm doing some- thing." Like many families who have service men and wo- men serving in the front lines in Saudi Arabia, Mrs. Hacker is trying to cope with the feelings of helplessness and anxiety as she prays for her brother-in-law's safe return. To help ease the anxiety, Jewish Family Service plans to soon begin a support group for people with relatives stationed in the Persian Gulf, said Margaret Weiner, associate executive director.
