he will be back at the base in
Newport, Calif., for the bir-

be over that fast," Marilyn

Flint's Jewish community,

his 30th birthday party in

"He'll be home by then. I
know he will. Now it will be
special for him to come
home," she said. "The com-
munity has embraced him."
Capt. Hallem, also the son
of Jim Hallem, has served in
the Marines for seven years.
He joined the military after
graduating with a degree in
criminal justice from Mich-
igan State University.
In 1984, he enrolled in a
10-week officer candidate
school.
Today Capt. Hallem flies
the military's largest
helicopter, which has the
capacity to carry 60 troops.
His phone call was the first
since Dec. 18.
"He had been flying
straight for 6 1/2 hours," she
said. "He can't tell me where
he is, or what he is doing. He
sleeps somewhere in the
desert in a 12-man tent with
no electricity.
"His morale seems good,"
she said. "He listens to the
Kmart radio I sent to him,"
she said. "He knew the
Giants won the Superbowl.
"I am extremely proud of
him. I don't want to talk
about the war, but I do sup-
port this country's position. I
am nervous and scared. I am
fully aware it can get a lot
worse before it gets better." _
Also at this Saturday's

will pray for the safe return of
its four other Jewish
soldiers, among them
Marine Cpl. Brad Wolin, a
crew chief technician on a
ship in the Persian Gulf.
