mobile unit, spending more
than seven of those hours on
the air reading news reports
and playing requests and
dedications by everyone
from top country artists to
pop and heavy metal musi-
cians.
" 'The Bartman' is pretty
popular over here," she said.
"We've been playing
`Ghostbusters' everytime
there is a Scud attack."
Unlike the movie Good
Morning, Vietnam, none of
the news is censored, Sgt.
Crockett said. The troops
have seen peace protesters.
She hopes those marching
against war still support the
men and women in Saudi
Arabia. She doesn't want to
see them get the same
welcome home party given
to the Vietnam vets.
Although she's never been
on the air during a Scud
missile attack, Sgt. Crockett
has been at the station dur-
ing a bombardment. "As we
put on our chemical gear we
play the national anthem to
bolster the morale of the
troops," she said.
While she's thankful to
have a gas mask near her
during such attacks, she re-
tains a sense of humor about
the device. "It has a small
hose that makes you sound
like Darth Vader when you
breathe," she said.
The war has also meant
plenty of sleepless nights for
Sgt. Crockett. Mrs. Nagler
said sometimes her daughter
is so skittish, she'll sleep at
the radio station fully dress-
ed.
Sgt. Crockett said she's
learned to be alert at all
times. "Once you hear the
Scud attacks, it's better to
wake up fast."
Despite her own bouts of
homesickness and her fears
during an attack, Sgt.
Crockett was determined
that soldiers listening to her
would never know if she was
in a bad mood. "You have to
put a positive light on
things," she said. "No one
else wants to hear about
your problems."
While she's worried about
Scud missile attacks in
Saudi Arabia, she cringes
every time Iraqi Scuds fall in
Israel.
"They are my people. I
care a great deal about
them," said Sgt. Crockett,
who was actively involved in
the Detroit Jewish commun-
ity before joining the Air
Force. "I very much admire
Israel's restraint," she said,
adding she hopes Israel isn't
drawn into the war. "I think
the United States is doing its
best to keep Israel out of all
of this." ❑
