NEWSBRIEFS

Compiled from Jewish Telegraphic Agency and Jerusalem Post
Foreign Service wire sources.

FRUITS OF RESTRAINT — Israel's restraint in the face of
Iraq's missile attacks is bearing diplomatic fruit in the Euro-
pean Community, which not so long ago was penalizing the
Jewish state for its handling of the Palestinian uprising. In a
reversal of policy, the European Commission, the E.C.'s exec-
utive body, has decided to lift sanctions imposed one year ago
against Israel in the field of scientific cooperation. The Euro-
pean Parliament, the legislative body of the E.C., is expected
to approve the decision.

A SLIGHT HITCH — The Vatican, expressing "profound
respect" for Israel, has issued a statement on its relations with
the Jewish state, in which it says that the absence of diplo-
matic ties does not mean the Holy See refuses to recognize
Israel's existence. But Israel must address the problems of the
Palestinians and the "occupied territories," including
Jerusalem, as well as the situation of the Catholic minority in
Israel, before full diplomatic ties can be established, according
to the statement, which was released Jan. 25.

ANTI-BIGOTRY SQUAD — Polish President Lech Walesa
has agreed to name a permanent task force to combat anti-
Semitism in his country. Mr. Walesa agreed to the task force
during an hour-long meeting Jan. 25 at his official residence
with Miles Lerman, a Holocaust survivor and chairman of the
Holocaust Memorial Council's international relations corn-
mittee. The task force will be made up of members of the
Polish government, professors, journalists and at least one
prominent Polish Catholic clergyman.

REBIRTH IN PRAGUE — The first B'nai B'rith lodge in
Czechoslovakia since the Nazi occupation 53 years ago was in-
augurated Jan. 27 in Prague at quiet ceremonies attended by
B'nai B'rith leaders from the United States and western
Europe. Zeno Dostal, a writer and film director, became the
first president of the organization, called the Renaissance
Lodge, which has more than 50 founding members.

ANTI-SEMITISM IN BRITAIN — Widespread anti-Semitic
attacks in Great Britain since the Persian Gulf war began
have prompted the Board of Deputies of British Jews to launch
its most extensive operation ever to protect Jewish lives and
property in the United Kingdom. The Board's Communal
Security Organization, its defense arm, has been operating
around the clock following a series of attacks including arson
in Birmingham and London and the desecration of London's
Holocaust memorial and the Jewish cemetery in Portsmouth.

HALF A HAGGADAH — The Polish government and the
Jewish community of Berlin have agreed to end their legal
dispute over ownership of the famed Wolf Haggadah. The ac-
cord stipulates that the 13th-century French-language Hag-
gadah, which before World War II belonged to the Berlin Jew-
ish community, would be given to the National Jewish Library
in Jerusalem. In exchange, Israel will donate a symbolic
cultural object to the Jewish Museum in Warsaw. But the
Haggadah's putative owner, Natan Hecht of Montreal, and his
representative, Berry Gross of Brooklyn, N.Y., still have not
agreed to relinquish their right to the rare piece of Judaica,
which is valued at about $1.5 million. A Swiss court is
scheduled to determine ownership in March.

GERMANY AIDS ISRAEL — Chancellor Helmut Kohl has
announced that Germany would grant Israel $165 million to
help overcome its economic problems, which have been
worsened by the Persian Gulf war. Mr. Kohl made the com-
mitment after being accused by opposition Social Democrats
and even members of his own Christian Democratic Union of
insensitivity toward Israel, especially after the Jewish state
became a target of Iraqi missile attacks.

TUBE GLUE — Israeli children 2-8 years old watch four to
five hours of TV a day, according to a poll by Israel's state
supported Educational Television channel. The figure is
disturbing, said an adviser to the Education Ministry
because it could be assumed that, as more channels than
the current two become available, the children will be glued
to the box for even longer.
