Garden Weddings Invitations You can convey a garden theme right from the start — with your invitations. "You could have an embossed flower on the invitation. In the throat of the flower, you could have a pearl or a rhinestone," suggests Deborah Weisserman of Deborah's Invitations in Southfield. "We have a wonderful invitation with an embossed rose on it. "River Place Inn has one of Detroit's most scenic riverfront locations, Detroit's only croquet club, a restaurant run by entrepreneur-chef Jimmy Schmidt and some of the coziest, most unusual rooms you'll find anywhere." "We take a simple, traditional invitation and wrap it with tissue and put a bow on it," she says. In the contemporary lines now available, flowered invitations would be considered rather sweet compared to others on the market. In contemporary invitations, the trend is to bright colors like hot pink and turquoise, enlivened even more by sparkles and ribbons. For a black and white wedding, a couple might pick black invitations with white writing. Large cards are favored over the fold- over type. Despite the variety of contempor- ary invitations, most brides still take the traditional route. The classic look has white or ecru paper, copperplate engraving, and the invitation can either be folded or not. A popular option is lined envelopes — nothing flashy, gray or beige moire linings, for example. Response (RSVP) cards and stamped envelopes are commonly inserted in the invitations. Although regional customs vary, it's common here to mail the invitations six weeks in advance of the wedding. Order your invitations with that time- frame in mind. Ms. Weisserman estimates that for a wedding of 100 guests, the average spent on invitations is $200 to $300. Obviously, you could spend more than that — and some people do, up to $700, $800, or more.
