Weekend brunches offer a perfect
time for casual convening. Plan
simple, affordable gatherings
featuring waffles, crepes or omelettes.
Round up as many pans as you have
burners or ask a few people to bring
waffle irons and have guests
participate in the production.
When shopping for gifts or planning
the shower's theme, be sure to
consider the couple's interests and
needs. Young newlyweds are apt to
need all kinds of appliances and
linens, whereas older couples
probably have an abundance.
Gifts for the garden, bath or kitchen
are popular but you can update them
by planning such variations as a re-
cipe exchange where guests bring a
prepared dish with the recipe at-
tached. A book shower is another
clever theme. The shower might fea-
ture "how-to" books — cookbooks,
gardening books, household tip
guides, and so forth.
Other up-to-date ideas include a
bathroom shower, coordinated
completely by the guests with
matching shower curtain, towels, soap
dishes and other accessories. At a
"round the clock shower," each guest
is told to bring a present for a specific
time of day — 4 p.m., for example,
could mean a cookbook for the bride
or groom planning dinner; 3 a.m., a
popcorn popper for night owls.
Helping the couple create their first
Jewish home is also a thoughtful
gesture. Avrom Borenstein of
Borenstein's in Oak Park, suggests
candlesticks. He also suggests a
Chanukah menorah, especially
popular in contemporary and
traditional styles for today's couples.
Other appropriate wedding gifts
include: Sabbath items, such as
challah covers, boards and knives;
Seder plates; a mezuzzah for their
new home; an item from the Lenox
Judaica collection which includes
candlesticks, a challah tray, a kiddush
cup and more; a Havadalah set; and
a sterling silver wine cup that can be
engraved with the couple's names
and date of their wedding and used
under the chuppah.
