cruises are sold exclusively through'
travel agents. Travel agents are
compensated for their services by the
cruise lines, not the customers.
Cost of Cruising
How much can you spend for your
honeymoon? Cruises are particularly
easy to budget because so much is
included in the fare, and it is not
difficult to keep track of the extras
beverages, laundry, phone calls, pho-
tographs, gratuities, shore excursions
and medical services. (Port charges,
usually around $40 per person, and
United States departure tax, around
$3 per person, will be added to your
fare by the travel agent.)
Gail Shapiro, owner of Summit
Travel and Cruise Shoppe in
Farmington Hills, said that while the
couple's personal habits (gambling,
drinking, touring, shopping, etc.) will
affect how much they spend on board
the ship, $500 spending money for
honeymooners on a seven-day cruise
should be ample.
Couples can cut their expenses by
touring the islands on foot, or in a taxi
with other couples, instead of taking
the ship's shore excursions which
usually cost between $l0-$25 per
person, Ms. Shapiro said.
While the four lines that travel
agents recommend most for honey-
mooners — Royal Caribbean, Prin-
cess, Norwegian Cruise Lines,
Carnival Cruise Lines — all bill
themselves as luxury cruise lines, the
price of luxury varies from one to the
next. Fares on each ship differ on the
basis of cabin category and the sea-
son. (All rates listed here are for one
person.)
On Royal Caribbean's Sovereign of
The Seas' seven-night eastern
Caribbean cruise, the top of the line
cabin, the Royal Suite, which has a
king-size bed, TV, refrigerator, large
bathtub and three huge windows,
costs $3,265 in the peak season,
December through March. During the
value season, April, June through
August, October, and November, the
same suite is $3,195. The economy
season offers lower fares for cruises
on certain dates in the months of
April through June, and August
