view toward the oppressed.
Ms. Mantooth describes her
paintings as "direct and con-
frontational — combining ex-
pressionist freedom with close
attention to the figures and
faces — reflecting human in-
tentions and emotional
responses." Twelve paintings
and 12 drawings will be
exhibited.

Ms. Mantooth, an Ameri-
can artist, traveled for al-
most two decades as a painter
and journalist in Venezuela
and Brazil. She studied at

the Andre' L'hote School
of Art in Paris, the Ed-
wiggi Possi Art Workshop in
Rome, the Association of Fine
Arts in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and
the Art Students League of
New York.
Mr. Goldstein, a political
science professor at Oakland,
will speak from noon-1:30
p.m. Mar. 14 on "Political
Caricature as Protest Art in
the 19th Century." The free
lecture will be in Gold Room
B of the Oakland Center.

hibition, call 370-3005.

Abstract Exhibit
Opens At DIA

"Richard Pousette-Dart: In-
ner Realms and Outer Space"
will open at the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts Feb. 10.
Mr. Pousette-Dart, a foun-
ding member of the Abstract
Expressionist movement and
a contemporary of Jackson
Pollock and Robert Mother-
well, appeared in the 1951
group portrait of the so-called
"Irascibles," the class picture
of a dozen artists who became

known as the New York
School. All sought to find
ways to explore the un-
conscious through art. While
Mr. Pousette-Dart shared the
beliefs with the other
Abstract Expressionists, he
turned to a deeper, more
enigmatic art filled with
meaning and references to
African sculpture as well as

American Indian and oceanic
imagery.
"Richard Pousette-Dart: In-
ner Realms and Outer Space"
spans 52 years (1938-1990) in
the artist's career. His pain-
tings, 70 of which appear in
the exhibition, are thick and
tapestry-like; many are con-
structed of an all-over surface
weave. Even as he draws on a
rich register of colors, his
most striking pictures use
modulated pigment within a
narrow range of tones that
also use white to great advan-
tage. Mr. Pousette-Dart con-
tinues to live in New York,
while keeping a studio in
Manhattan.
The exhibit has been
organized by the Indianapolis
Museum of Art with support
from the AT&T Foundation,
the National Endowment for
the Arts and the Indiana Arts
Commission. Presentation in
Detroit is made possible by
additional funding from
AT&T, the city of Detroit, the
state of Michigan and the
Founders Society.
