This Soviet ensemble has played arts festivals across Europe under the direction of Oleg Tabakov, a leading master of Soviet theater and film. The Moscow Studio Theatre will present My Big Land, Feb. 1 — a tender and touching play by Jewish dissi- dent writer Alexander Galich. The play is a 20th century look at the engross- ing Russian themes of fatherhood and motherland, paternity and place. Maria Mironova, will star in Alexander Buraysky's The Teacher of Russian Feb. 2. A distinctly black comedy, the play whisks us through the wards of a corrupt hospital — Buraysky's metaphor for the chaos of Russian society. In- corporating adult themes, partial nudity and satire, the play is a witty commentary on modern Soviet life. These performances will be in Russian with simultaneous translation into English via infrared headsets — the translation is rehearsed and integrated into the play so the actors' pacing and dramatics remain in tact.
