lene Schuster could be
called a visionary artist.
Her medium is the com-
puter. Her message is pro-
phetic. In 1988 she began a
series of computer art
photographs featuring
scenes of war with soldiers
in camouflage garb wearing
gas masks. This West
Bloomfield artist completes
the "War Series" exhibition
tomorrow at the Birm-
ingham Bloomfield Art
Association.
"Working with the com-
puter has been an attempt
for me to tap the essence of
our time and to glimpse the
future," said Mrs. Schuster.
She explains that computers
are vehicles for war
machinery and that gave her
the idea for her war theme.
Mrs. Schuster began her
computer art career in 1976
and has been in the forefront
of this medium since study-
ing at Massachusetts In-
stitute of Technology. She
earned a master's degree in
fine arts from Wayne State
University in 1974.
In order to create her corn-
puter art, she uses a special
pen called a stylus and a
digitizing tablet. As she
draws on the tablet, the
image appears on a color
graphic monitor. She then
stores her work on a floppy
disk, from which it is shot
onto photographic film. Her
work is processed and
printed by Environmental
Research Institute of Mich-
igan in Ann Arbor. "They
specialize in outer space
photography, and it is the
same level of equipment that
NASA uses," she said.

In an introduction to a na-
tional exhibition on corn-
puter art that she curated in
1989, Mrs. Schuster states
her philosophy: "Computers
are the embodiment of our
creative and destructive
potential. They may affect
our salvation — or demise.
Right now our potential to
destroy far outweighs our
capacity to create. Perhaps
with computers, the situa-
tion may reverse and beauty
along with harmony will
ultimately reign supreme."
