Historical Museum
Lecture Series

The Detroit Historical
Museum will offer three lec-
tures in February as part of
its ongoing lecture series.
The lectures are: "The Art
of Julius and Gari Melchers"
Feb. 2 and 9. Local architec-
tural historian Michael Far-
rell will present this two-part
lecture and tour on two of
Michigan's most prominent
artists, Julius and Gari
Melchers.
The tour and lecture will
begin at the Detroit
Historical Museum 10 a.m.
Feb. 2. There is a fee.
"Behind the Scenes of
Hilberry Theatre," Feb. 2.
Wayne State University
costumer Wendy Jones will
lead a behind the scenes tour
and lecture about the
Hilberry theatre's costume
collection and a matinee per-
formance of Peer Gynt. Par-
ticipants will meet at the
Detroit Historical Museum
12:30 p.m. Feb. 2. There is a
fee for non-members.
"Valentine Day Lecture and
Workshop," Feb. 9. The
Detroit Historical Depart-
ment's curator of Social
History, Cynthia Young,
will recount the history
of the lover's holiday and
exhibit special valen-
tines from the Detroit
Historical Department's col-
lection. Janet Hartman will
instruct children and parents
in creating a valentine's
memento for their special
valentine. The workshop will
be held 1-3 p.m. Admission is
free. The lecture will begin at
1:00 p.m. It is not necessary
to attend both programs.
For ticket information, call
Lori Naples, 833-1419.

'Nunsense'
At Birmingham

The zany, saucy and ir-
reverent musical Nunsense
will open a five-week return
engagement Feb. 5-March 10
at the Birmingham Theatre.
The Order of the Little
Sisters of Hoboken needs
money to bury four "blue
nuns" who are stored in their
convent freezer. The unfor-
tunate four have expired after
consuming contaminated
soup prepared by Sister Julia,
Child of God. The Sisters
decided to put on a show to
raise the necessary funds for
the burial.
Marilyn Farina, who
originated the role of the
Reverend Mother in New
York (and who was the model
for the hilarious Nunsense
greeting cards), will repeat
her role in this production.
For ticket information, call
the Birmingham Theatre box
office, 644-3533.
