Soviet Olim
Establish
Tech Center

Jerusalem (JTA) — Soviet
Jewish scientists have laun-
ched a project in the Negev
development town of Ofakim
aimed at creating jobs for
newly arrived colleagues
with degrees in science or
engineering.
A team of 12 senior scien-
tists, all recent immigrants,
gathered Jan. 8 in Ofakim to
inaugurate the Technology
Center for New Immigrant
Scientists. They are its first
employees.
The center is dedicated to
research and development of
high-tech products that
could become the basis of
new manufacturing in-
dustries employing immi-
grant scientists and techni-
cians who cannot find jobs in
the existing private sector.
The center was set up by
the Jewish Agency for Israel
in conjunction with the Min-
istry of Construction and
Housing and the Labor Min-
istry's Center for Absorption
of Scientists.
The Jewish Agency's
Department of Renewal and
Development is financing
the first phase of the project,
which is part of a nationwide
plan for economic develop-
ment.
It hopes to develop such
products as liquid ice, bear-
ings for motors, batteries
and exact measurement in-
struments that, it is hoped,
will encourage en-
trepreneurs to open new
plants or expand existing
ones, thereby creating more
job opportunities.
Five more centers are
planned for the Negev in the
months ahead.

JNF Makes Cuts
To Aid Soviets

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Jewish National Fund is
willingly foregoing an an-
nual income of $25 million to
$30 million from land ear-
marked for residential and
related construction in order
to keep the cost of building
houses for Soviet immi-
grants as low as possible.
JNF Chairman Moshe
Rivlin is positively cheerful
over the prospects, although
it means launching a $100
million fund-raising cam-
paign overseas to make up
the shortfall.
The point is that immi-
grant housing is getting
built far more rapidly and
cheaply than would other-
wise have been the case.

LUBAVITCHER REBBE
ENCOURAGES
TOURISM TO ISRAEL;
STRONGLY ADVISED
NOT TO LEAVE ISRAEL

NEW YORK (LNS) — The
Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi
Menachem M. Schneerson,
continues to strongly en-
courage tourism to the Holy
Land.
In words charged with opti-
mism, the Rebbe told a group
of prominent American Jews
who were considering cancell-
ing their scheduled visit to
Israel that "The Holy Land is
the safest place on earth," and
that their apprehensions,
were unfounded. He further
urged them to publicize their
trip so that others would
emulate their example.
In response to comments
made by representatives of
the Israeli Iburist Ministry
and by airline executives that
tourism to Israel has not been
faring well recently, the
Rebbe said, "I have been con-
sistently encouraging tour-
ism to Israel, and discourag-
ing people from leaving. It is
the safest place for every
Jew?'
Since the beginning of the
Gulf crisis the Rebbe has
been a beacon of hope and en-
couragement, cautioning
Jews in Israel and abroad not
to succumb to fear and gloom
troubling many at this time.
Quoting from Deuteronomy
11:12 that "The eyes of G-d
are constantly vigilant upon
the Land of Israel," the Rebbe
said that G-d's watchful eye
will surely protect Israel and
its people from any harm.
The Rebbe's reassuring
comments were made to
numerous individuals, groups
and various Federation
leaders during his celebrated
Sunday morning audiences,
when thousands of people

from all walks of life, and
from all over the world, visit
the Rebbe at Lubavitch World
Headquarters. The Rebbe
gives each visitor his bless-
ings and a crisp, new dollar
bill to be given by the reci-
pient to a charity of his/her
choice.
In a similar response issued
to those residing or studying
in Israel the Rebbe said that
they should not leave for
reasons of security, and
reassured them of their cer-
tain and complete safety
there. 1/13/91

LUBAVITCHER REBBE
CALLS ON WORLD JEWRY
• TO CELEBRATE
SABBATH WITH JOY

NEW YORK (LNS) A special
blessing was issued today by
the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rab-
bi Menachem M. Schneerson,
to Jews in Israel and the
world over for "a Sabbath of
peace and blessing!'
Referring to the biblical bid-
ding to rejoice on the Sab-
bath, the Rebbe called upon
Jewish communities to
celebrate the Sabbath with
manifest and tangible joy.
Since the beginning of the
Gulf crisis, in August, the
Rebbe has been a beacon of
hope and encouragement,
cautioning Jews in Israel and
abroad not to succumb to fear
and gloom troubling many at
this time.
The Rebbe said that G-d's
watchful eye will surely pro-
tect Israel and its people from
any harm, saying that "it is
the safest place on earth!'
The Rebbe has continually
been encouraging increased
tourism to Israel and
discouraging those residing
or studying in Israel from
leaving, assuring them of
their certain and complete
safety there. 1/18/91
