Cheese, Hospitality Abound In Zurich RUTH ROVNER Special to The Jewish News T his is a typical Swiss dinner, nothing elabo- rate, so please make yourself at home," says Heidi Biedermann, leading the way to the dining room. On the table is a plateful of assorted Swiss cheeses. There's hard cheese, soft cheese, tangy cheese, and mild cheese. Along with the cheeses are potatoes, salad, rolls, and fruit and yogurt for dessert. The dinner offers more than tasty food. Along with all varieties of Swiss cheese, there is the flavor of hospitali- ty. On the napkins at the table is a greeting in German, which translates to "Welcome from the family Bieder- mann." And they mean it. They are native Swiss Jews who disprove the notion that the Swiss are cold and distant. Indeed, the Biedermanns — Freddy, Heidi and their daughter Karen — are friend- ly, unpretentious and eager to meet travelers to Zurich who, like many tourists in foreign cities, come to Zurich and would like the chance to meet the Swiss. The Biedermanns par- ticipate in a special program sponsored by the Zurich tourist office. Called "Meet the Swiss," it gives tourists the chance to meet Swiss host families registered with the program, who usually invite guests for an informal meeting in their own homes. "We've met people from all over — from Israel, South Africa, Canada, and the United States," says Heidi, bringing to the table the guest book that she keeps nearby, and which she always asks guests to sign. After twenty years in the program, their guest book is crammed with names. On its pages are messages that their guests have written in German, French, Hebrew, English, and Yiddish, and signatures of people with wide-ranging home ad- dresses: Haifa, Johannesburg, the Bronx, Manila, Tel -Aviv, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Toronto, Pittsburgh. Many guests are delighted with Zurich, a cosmopolitan and beautiful city of hills, a river and expansive Lake The 'Meet the Swiss' program gives tourists the chance to meet Swiss host families. Zurich. But their messages indicate that meeting a Swiss family — especially a Jewish family — in their own home is a highlight of their travel experience. Because the Biedermanns are the only Jewish family in the Meet the Swiss program, they've hosted a wide assort- ment of Jewish visitors, from the Orthodox rabbi from Chicago to the Jewish family from the Phillippines. "Whenever a Jewish fami- ly signs up for the program, they're always matched with us," says Heidi. Jewish travelers who meet the Biedermanns not only get to enjoy Swiss cheese and old- fashioned hospitality, but they also learn about Jewish life in the city which is home to 7,000 Jews. "Did you know that we belong to the largest German- speaking congregation in the world?" asks Freddy. Zurich, in the center of German-
