undefeated record to 3-0 with
last Saturday night's 26-12
romp over the previously
unbeaten Pittsburgh Bulls at
the JLA. Goldberg got his
first two goals of the season
and got two assists to give
himself five so far.
Turbo coach Mido Martin-
ello says Goldberg is "very in-
fluential to our team. He's a
world-class player."
Goldberg's role will vary,
Martinello says, depending on
the opponent's strategy. "On
a given night, Jeff could be a
big goal-scorer. Another
night, when he's watched
very closely, he might be a
playmaker. His ability is that
he can adapt to either situa-
tion."
Martinello adds that
Goldberg behaves "like he's
about 21 or 22" with his "en-
thusiasm, his get-up-and-go,
his work ethic in practice."
The 5-foot-8, 155 pound
Goldberg was originally at-
tracted to lacrosse because
"They'd never say you were
too small as long as you were
fast, had great stickhandling
and you liked the intense
play.
"And it's got everything
that I always wanted. It's
quick; it's fast. There's hit-

ting. It's a rough-and-tough
game. But it's got beautiful,
gracious things to it. It's uni-
que. It's an art to me; it's a
neat art.
"It's not like being a foot-
ball player and you've got
your football. You've got your
lacrosse stick and it's
something. It's like a wand.
It's like you're going out there
to perform.
"Of course, when you score
a lot of goals and make 15,000
people happy, it's a thing that
you always want to do in your
life. That's why I keep doing
it. I'm 30 (as of next Aug. 21)
and I think I'll play another
five or six years."
Goldberg also plays outdoor
lacrosse for the Long Island
Lacrosse Club. A starting
midfielder there, Goldberg
has been on four Long Island
national championship
teams.
"I love to coach the outdoor
game and be a part of the out-
door game, but I love the in-
door game," says Goldberg.
"It's exciting to play in front
of all these people. The game
is a good game to watch if you
don't know about lacrosse,
because you can enjoy it, with
the goal-scoring and all that
stuff."
Goldberg, one of three
players from the original
USA-Canada tour still active
in the MILL, says he is the
league's top wage earner, at
$300 per game plus expenses.
He predicts growth and ex-
pansion for the MILL, but
does not expect to be playing
when it becomes a major
sport. He may pursue an
MILL coaching job after his
playing career ends, but col-
lege coaching is his priority
now.
Goldberg says he has en-
countered a few Jewish
lacrosse players. "They're all
tough, of course. It's a tough
breed — always been
fighters;' he says. "It's a uni-
que thing, being a part of that
tradition, and I'm very happy
to have the name and be a
part of that whole
background.
"My mother was half-
Italian and half-Jewish. She
brought me up. It was hard
for her to guide me to what
was the right thing in life.
But she said, 'Always be pro-
ud of your name.' "
Growing up Jewish in an
Irish-Catholic neighborhood
plus being small and father-
less, Goldberg became a
strong-willed, driven, fighting
spirit.
"Nobody thought I was
good enough;' he says. "I had
to prove everybody wrong. I
always had to prove
everybody wrong.
"That's what's driven me.
I've never laid back and said,
`Yeah, I'm a good player; or
`I'm hot; I'm Jeff Goldberg.'
I've always said, 'Yeah, I'm
small; I've got to do it and I've
always got to improve.' "
"I can never get to the point
where I'm happy. I'm always
driving. I'm still playing with
my lacrosse stick every day at
30 — every day. It's a success
story in which I never got
that much of a pat on the
back. That's why I'm a coach
— because I never had that."
Now, with his coaching
career rolling, Goldberg can
give out pats on the back,
savor the feeling, "and go
home and sleep like a baby.
"And say, 'Yeah, 35 kids
wanted to kill for me to-
day.' " D

We Celebrate!
When Soviet Jews arrive in Israel, they plant a tree and form a
personal connection to their new homeland. On Tu B'Shevat,
January 30, 1991, they'll join thousands of fellow Israelis in
planting trees in Jewish National Fund forests.
Even if you're not in Israel, you too can celebrate Tu B'Shevat, the
Jewish New Year of the Trees, by planting a tree in honor or
memory of a friend or loved one. A beautiful certificate will be
sent to the person designated. Just
