Presents Shortcuts For Caregivers B UJ I purchased by teen-age boys playing war games, painters, asbestos-removal workers or police depart- ments for emergency usage, many buyers now are "very rational people" in their ear- ly to mid-30s, store owners said. Israeli Hams Mum, Shortwavers Claim Jewish "ham" radio operators in contact with their Israeli counterparts during Operation Desert Storm say mum's the word these days. "They are very cautious about describing what is go- ing on there" out of concern that enemy ears may be eavesdropping, said attorney Arnold Podolsky of Hun- tington Woods, who spoke with Israelis via shortwave radio during the lull in Iraqi missile attacks. Physician Robert Blau of Bloomfield Hills, who has been in regular contact through the years with longtime friend and former Detroiter Jim Stone of Herzliya, said Mr. Stone told him he'd write a letter when Dr. Blau asked about one of the missile attacks. Dr. Blau said he's run telephone patches on his shortwave system to allow Detroit residents to speak with family and friends in Israel. The Detroit Jewish Com- munity Center's radio club at the Maple-Drake Building has been largely out of com- mission since November when a windstorm blew down its directional antenna. And while there is an antenna at the Jimmy Prentis Morris Building, it hasn't been used in several years, according to Mark Shaw of the JCC club. Club Is Hearing Israeli Broadcasts The Friends of Israel Radio, a club based in Detroit with worldwide membership, reports that the Israeli broadcasting ser- vice's external service is now carrying live, rather than taped, newscasts during the Gulf crisis. Allan Gale, associate di- rector of the Detroit Jewish Community Council and a fan of shortwave radio, said those with shortwave receivers can hear the newscasts daily at 5:30, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. and midnight on the 11605, 9435 and 7465 kilohertz frequencies. Mr. Gale founded the clul- as a hobby in 1989. 0 'The Sandwich Generation" An Informational Conference AUXILIARY JEWISH HOME FOR AGED — PANELISTS — ■ Hon. Susan Moiseev ■ Sander J.
