FRIDAY JANUARY 25 1991

661.3838

ew Dimensions maga-
zine lived up to its
name in coverage of
the Middle East conflict in its
January issue.
Devoting 35 pages to the
Israel-Arab conflict, the
magazine presented a dimen-
sion seldom seen in the
media: a pro-Israel point of
view.
Published out of Grants
Pass, Oregon, New Dimen-
sions is a slick, highly-
professional news magazine.
Its format is very much like
Time Newsweek and other
major national publications
but that is where the
resemblance ends as it per-
tains to coverage of Israel.
Not part of what is called
the "herd instinct" in the
media, the magazine publish-
ed a series of articles on the
conflict in January, articles
ranging from an analysis of
the Persian Gulf crisis to a
highly-critical analysis of
what the magazine views as
pro Arab news coverage by
the nation's media.
The different slant on the
story is implied with the
cover headline, "Is Israel Be-
ing Sacrificed?"
Those reading the stories
can come away with only one
conclusion, that indeed it is.
The magazine is four years
old with newsstand sales be-
ing available for the first time
last year. It has 22,000
subscribers, plus 30,000 edi-
tions on newsstands in all 50
states and 20 foreign
countries.
In several sidebars to major
stories, the January issue
outlines the history of the

Middle East conflict,
publishes interviews with
major political figures and of-
fers a major critique of the
U.S. media in an article en-
titled, "U.S. Media: The
PLO's Fifth Column!' The
story was written by Don
Feder, a columnist for the

Boston Herald.

In an interview for The
David
Kupelian, the magazine's
managing editor, described
his publication as -"moderate-
ly conservative," but not what
might be described as "right
wing!' In running the story
on the media, the magazine
decided "to name names and
take license plate numbers!'
"If there was bias involved,
we needed to expose that;' he
said.
Mr. Kupelian said the idea
to present a pro-Israel point of
view resulted from the Arab
riot at the Temple Mount last
summer and subsequent
United Nations resolutions
condemning Israel. •
"It was clear to us that the
media only presented one
side," said Mr. Kupelian. "It
did not report the provoca-
tions nor did the U.N. resolu-
tion mention those that pro-
voked the incident. Neither
reflected both sides of the
story. And the U.S. broke
ranks with Israel."
He said that there was
unanimity among the staff
when the story and its angle
was discussed at New Dimen-
sions editorial meetings.
Mr. Kupelian said it is clear
that the U.S. media has not
been supportive of Israel in
recent years. He does not
believe that the posture
results from anti-Semitism or
an anti-Israel point of view.
