he doors at Congrega-
tionBeth Achim are
locked now. A buzzer
system will soon be installed
so office secretaries don't
have to get up to let guests
in.
"I like the idea of knowing
who is in the building and
having control over access,"
said Beth Robinson, the syn-
agogue's executive director.
"The Southfield police have
been so helpful. A crime
prevention person spent an
hour with me trying to im-
prove security. We talked
about everything from lock
ing the doors to building a
fence around the syn-
agogue."
Ms. Robinson isn't the only
director of a Detroit Jewish
institution trying to beef up
security in the wake of the
Persian Gulf war and fears
of terrorism. At Jewish
Family Service, a security
guard watches the entrance.
Other institution leaders
don't want to talk about
specific measures, but Rabbi
Reuven Drucker of Young
Israel of Greenfield agrees
there is a heightened sense
of security awareness.
Last week, Jewish com-
munal leaders discussed
security measures with offi-
cials from the Southfield and
Oak Park public safety
departments and the FBI.
Many of the security sug-
gestions were basic common
sense things, said Richard
Loebenthal, Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith director. For example,
most, if not all, doors should
be locked at all times and
suspicious incidents or
strangers should be noted.
Mail, especially irregularly-
shaped packages with no
return address, should be
checked for signs of oil stains
or wires and be turned into
the police if necessary.
Mr. Lobenthal urged Jew-
ish community leaders con-
cerned with security to use
"reasonable prudence," but
not to adopt a "siege men-
tality."
At Jewish Vocational Ser-
vice, the security measures
are nothing new, said Bar-
bara Nurenberg, JVS asso-
ciate executive director.
"Because of the kind of office
we are where we have a
number of handicapped and
senior adults, we make
security a priority," she
said. ❑
