speaking Switzerland, has a
larger concentration of Jews
than any city in Germany.
Because Zurich is a center
of German-Jewish culture,
the Biedermanns enjoy an ac-
tive Jewish life. They're
members of Zurich's Conser-
vative congregation and wor-
ship in the main synagogue,
a distinctive domed
synagogue on Lowenstrasse
that's marked on city maps
and pointed out on city bus
tours.
They often attend cultural
programs at the modern
Jewish community center,
where they can also dine on
kosher cuisine at the
Restaurant Schalom.
They can select their own
kosher Swiss cheese — and
other favorite foods — in the
fashionable downtown
department store, Jelmoli,
which has an entire kosher
food section.
Often, too, they go to bar
mitzvah and wedding recep7
tions at the modern Hotel
Zurich. "It's the favorite place
in the city for kosher catered
receptions," says Heidi.
But the Jews of Zurich have
historic as well as modern
places to celebrate special
events.
When Heidi's niece Daniela
Honigsberg married Robi
Bloch two years ago, they
chose to be married in a
village synagogue about half
an hour from Zurich.
Endingen is one of two
villages where the Jews of
Switzerland were first per-
mitted to live. Its historic
synagogue, though no longer
in active use, was the site
chosen by the bridal couple
for their wedding.
"There was no heating;
there were no toilets, but this
is where they both wanted to
be married," says Heidi. "And
it was a wonderful wedding."
It was especially ap-
propriate, she says, because
her own father comes from
Endingen. Both Heidi and
Freddy have parents who are
native Swiss; and, in Heidi's
case, so were her
grandparents.
"My family has lived in
Switzerland at least since
1738," she says. She thinks
family history dates way back
to pre-1700, but because there
was a fire in the village of En-
dingen and the records were
destroyed, she cannot verify
it.
"I wish I had the early
records," says Heidi, who's in
a Jewish genealogy club, has
made elaborate family trees,
and has cousins, aunts, nieces
and nephews all over north-
ern Switzerland.
The conversation about
relatives leads her to talk
