Art Afternoon
At DIA

The Community House of
Birmingham is planning a
day trip to the Detroit In-
stitute of Art for a docent-led
tour of the musuem's French
collection 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Jan. 30. The outing will in-
clude transportation and
lunch.
This Afternoon of Art will
feature French works from
the 17th to the 19th cen-
turies. Paintings, sculpttire
and decorative arts from ar-
tists Degas, Rodin, Carpeaux,
and Cezanne are included in
the tour. The group will be led
through the Dodge and
Kanzler Rooms and into the
newly-deisgned 19th-century
European galleries.
Luncheon will be served in
LaPalette, the musuem's din-
ing room.
The cost of the tour will in-
clude transportation to and
from the Community House,
a tour escort, the tour itself,
and the lunch.

Oak Park Library
Sets Programs

To celebrate Black History
Month, the Oak Park Library
will present an art display
and musical event.
Mr. Dwight Smith, advertis-
ing art and display coor-
dinator at AAA of Michigan,
will display watercolor, oil
and acrylic paintings Jan.
26-Feb. The paintings are
abstract with the designs bas-
ed on traditional African
symbolism. Mr. Smith is ac-
tive in the arts, serving as
coordinator of art programs at
Your Heritage House, Detroit,
and as Visual Arts Coor-
dinator for New Initiatives for
the Arts, a Grand Rapids bas-
ed minority arts group which
sponsors traveling visual and
performing arts shows
throughout Michigan. He is
also past president of the na-
tional African-American fine
arts organization National
Conference of Artists. A
public reception for the artist
is scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m.
Jan. 27 at the library.
Loba and the African
Rhythm Band will perform
7-8 p.m. Feb. 10 at the library. -
The music is described as
West African Jazz Fusion per-
formed by Loba Akou, guitar
and vocals; Bill Mikahil; bass,
percussion and keyboards;
Andre Bell, drums and per-
cussion and Darryl Cardwell,
percussion. The group uses
different musical elements.
Both programs are free of
charge.
