Foreshadows

In response to this un-
provoked and inhuman
military attack, the first in
history on the Jewish people,
Israel is commanded to blot
out the name of Amalek by
means of the sword.
But anti-Semitism en-
dures. Despite the defeat of
Amalek, his spiritual
descendants have risen up in
virtually every generation,
from Haman to Hitler, seek-
ing to destroy the Jewish
people.
Indeed, the Torah portion
ends with Moses celebrating
victory by building an altar
to God and saying, "the Lord
will have war with Amalek

from generation to genera-
tion."
In our generation, Amalek
is personified by Saddam
Hussein, who chooses to
wage war against the people
of Israel by attacking
helpless civilians. (Rabbis
have noted that, in Hebrew,
the name Saddam Hussein
has the same numerical
equivalent as that of
Amalek.)
In the end, though, it is
Saddam who will be brought
low and destroyed. And it is
the State of Israel, out-
numbered and despised by
her enemies, that will sur-
vive. ❑

FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 1991

Maybe we were hoping that
Saddam would be easy prey
for the massive technology
being thrown against Iraq.
When we walked into
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek Thursday evening for
the formal opening of the
1991 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, we were stunned by
the crowds gathered around
two television screens, stan-
ding in silence as the Scud
missiles crashed into Israel.
Suddenly, our front page
was inaccurate, misleading
and, frankly, didn't matter
much anymore. Suddenly,
what we thought was a mop-
ping-up action in the far-
away Persian Gulf had
become personal and was

threatening kin and friends.
Suddenly, the national an-
thems of America and Israel
had far more meaning
Thursday evening. So did
the American flags that
sprouted throughout my
neighborhood last weekend.
We worked hard again this
week to bring our readers
the most up-to-date news
that we could. We even ar-
ranged to print the front
page on Thursday.
But somehow this pales as
I sit in front of the television
screen night after night,
praying that Israel will be
spared the machinations of a
terrorist madman who
wants to emulate Adolf
Hitler.
