GOLDENBERG'
OTOGRAPHY

"My date has gas! My date
is actually farting!" she told
Ms. Markin. "This was never
mentioned in my Dating
Years class."
Others were as difficult as
the 35 phone calls it took to
track down interviewer David
Frost, after he had agreed to
be interviewed, or getting a
chance to talk to fugitive Ab-
bie Hoffman, who kept disap-
pearing on her.
Ms. Markin has become an
"unofficial love expert," she
said, as a result of her in-
vestigations, with a specialty
in blind dates and in getting
out of bad ones.
"There's more than one way
to get out of a bad date," she
said in a telephone interview
from her home in Los
Angeles. "Say the word 'we'
too many times, mention
children at a particularly
romantic moment, mention a
particular boyfriend (or girl-
friend) with a twinkle in your
eye."
Ms. Markin is now collec-
ting tales of dating woe from
all walks of life, from vitamin
salesmen and coal miners to
business people for her next
project.
"Regular folks often have
better stories" than
celebrities, she said.
Ms. Markin related the tale
of the woman who is out on a
date with a mortician, who
got beeped on his pager dur-
ing the evening.
"So she has to go with him
to pick up a dead body" which
slid around the back of the
car throughout the rest of
their rendezvous, Ms. Markin
said. "Then he takes her
home in a hearse," she said,
"because he has to go to a
funeral first thing the next
morning."
Her book can serve as corn-
fort for the single. "For the
not-so-single, it's also comfor-
ting," she said. "Because
"Regular folks
often have better
stories."

maybe you made the right
decision to get married."
Ms. Markin is looking for
bad dates to include in her
next book. If you've ever had
an excruciating interlude,
send a synopsis of it, along
with your name, phone
number and address to her at
740 North Hayworth, Los
Angeles, Calif 90046. ❑

The Continent
Makes A Difference
Actress Rae Dawn
Chong remembered that
first appearances can be
deceiving.
...I met this beautiful
guy in Paris who was
fresh off a kibbutz. He
was just gorgeous:
blonde, curly hair, very
Israeli, you know, that
Jewish poetic stunner. Dark
overcoat, jeans, sweatshirt.
Just nice, very artistic.
We had espressos and
everything was glamor-
ous and fabulous and sen-
suous, but unfortunately,
he was leaving.
So we made a date for
Los Angeles where we
both lived..
...When he came to pick
me up in Los Angeles he
was, first of all, driving a
souped-up Camaro. He
had on platform shoes
with three or four inch
heels, (This was in the
late, late seventies, early
eighties, so they were way
out of style.) He had on a
belt that wrapped around
his waist, then around his
left thigh, and he insisted
that we go to Burger
King.
I was all dressed up and
so disappointed. I just
stood there, stunned,
looking at this apparition,
and decided that this was
not for me.
I ended a lot of dates at
the door at the time, sur-
prisingly enough. I don't
think he was shocked.
Actually I think he felt
that the second I laid eyes
on him whatever chem-
istry that was there in Paris
was left in Paris . . . ❑
