The finding, after a three- month investigation, by a six-member ADL commis- sion headed by Richard Glovsky flatly rejected the contention by conservative supporters of the newspaper that it was "a criminal act of sabotage" by an outsider. "There is no question this was a blatant anti-Semitic incident," Mr. Glovsky said at a news conference here Jan. 9. "The inclusion of the Hitler quote was done by a member of the Dartmouth Review and not an outside saboteur, the commission be- lieves." He pointed out that "in order to change the mast- head, the individual had to have familiarity with the inner workings of the paper." The Hitler quote, publish- ed in the Oct. 3, 1990, edi- tion and distributed on Yom Kippur, read in part, "By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord's work." Mr. Glovsky said ADL's exhaustive investigation did not pinpoint a single in- dividual responsible for the act but the panel has its suspicions. A criminal investigation is underway by police in Hanover, N.H., where Dartmouth is located. ADL forwarded copies of its 50-page report to mem- bers of the Dartmouth com- munity, including the trust- ees and advisors of the uni- versity, in hopes that they would sit down and discuss the seriousness of the matter, Mr. Glovsky said. But he was not optimistic. The Dartmouth Review is not the official publication of Dartmouth College, but was established to express con- servative views on the Dartmouth campus. It is subsidized by conservative circles in New York and Washington. Asked who was ultimately responsible for the acts of the Review and its staff, Mr. Glovsky said that people who lend their name to the publication should be held accountable.
