rotherhood No. 1
gained the final play-
off berth in Division B
of the Metro Detroit B'nai
B'rith Men's Volleyball
League Sunday over arch-
rival Brotherhood No. 4 by
the slimmest of margins —
one game.
And the No. l's did it the
hard way, too: by rallying
from behind in four of the five
games — including the all-
important fifth game, which
went to sudden-death — in
-sweeping Marshall Lodge,
5-0, on the final day of the
regular season.
Sunday's sweep gave
Brotherhood No. 1 a 34-46
season record, compared to
Brotherhood No. 4's 33-47
mark. If No. 1 hadn't won that
fifth game, the two teams
would have finished tied for
the season and No. 4 would
have gone to the playoffs
because it owned one more
regular-season victory over
No. 1.
The league playoffs,
scheduled for Jan. 20, start at
8:30 a.m. at the Oakland
Community College — Or-
chard Ridge Campus.
Brotherhood No. 4, captain-
ed by Dennis Kay, set the
stage for Brotherhood No. 1
on. Jan. 13 by defeating third-
place Detroit No. 1, 4-1, losing
the opening game of the
match. Larry Newman is the
Detroit No. 1 captain.
When Brotherhood No. 1,
captained by Larry Sidman,
took the court after No. 4's
match, it knew it had to win
all five games against the
Mark Rosenberg-led Marshall
crew to make the playoffs.
After a 15-0 opening romp,
however, the No. l's found
themselves trailing in subse-
quent games by 10-0 and 12-4
margins.
In the finale, No. l's trailed
12-10 and 13-11 before pull-
ing into a 14-14 tie. The game
became a sudden-death affair,
with Brotherhood No. 1 win-
ning by the necessary two-
point margin, 16 14.
The two Brotherhood teams
formerly were last year's
Brotherhood No. 1 team.
The playoff schedule: 8:30
