Local Groups
Weigh Security

PHIL JACOBS

Managing Editor

ven though the con-
flict might be
thousands of miles
away from Detroit, the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation and
the B'nai B'rith Anti-
Defamation League are
quietly going about the
business of briefing Jewish
organizations concerning
the security of buildings and
personnel.

"We have discussed the
issue of security," said Fed-
eration executive vice presi-
dent Bob Aronson. "The
Jewish Community Council
is organizing an effort in
conjunction with ADL that
will give information con-
cerning security to all of our
agencies, synagogues and
temples. We feel we have to
alert our local police
departments about possible
security risks, and we need
to be briefed by our local
police departments and law
enforcement agencies.
That's the first step. This is
a time for vigilance and a
time for extra care, espe-
cially as it involves agencies
with kids."

Richard Lobenthal, ADL
executive director for Mich-
igan, has sent memos to
Jewish institutional direc-
tors, pointing out the need to
be sensitive "to the ob-
vious." Mr. Lobenthal said
there seems to be more low
level harassment being
directed at the Chaldean
community than at the Jew-
ish community.

"Obviously, as long as
Israel is not party to the
Desert Shield conflict, one
can presume there's not go-
ing to be harassment of Jew-
ish institutions," Mr. Loben-
thal said. "However, it
would be foolish of us not to
entertain the possibility that
this situation requires more
sensitivity on the part of
managers of Jewish institu-
tions than normal."

David Gad-Harf, exec-
utive director of the Jewish
Community Council, said
his organization is assuring
community members that
their concerns about securi-
ty are being taken seriously.

"During these tense times,
all appropriate steps are be-
ing taken by the various
agencies and organizations
of the Jewish community to
deal with any contingen-
cies," he said.
