Akiva Parents
Raising Funds

School parents are
gathering together to
help ease the school's finan-
cial troubles.
The Parents' Committee to
Save Akiva was to meet
Wednesday night for the
first time for a brainstorm-
ing session, said Michael
Tinman, committee chair-
man. "We need to find a way
to raise a decent amount of
money," Mr. Tinman said.
Akiva owes Southfield
Public Schools $30,000 by
Feb. 1 or it could face the
possibility of foreclosure.
The payment is part of a
renegotiated land contract
agreement between the
school district and Akiva.
The day school had signed a
land contract agreement to
purchase the former Annie
Lathrup Elementary School
in 1984 for $350,000. The
$30,000 would bring Akiva's
payments up to date. ' The
school would then continue
to make its regular monthly
payments of more than
$3,500.
While Akiva officials say
paying the money on time
won't be a problem, some
parents want to help the
school get out of debt and
stop Southfield's threat of
foreclosure.
During a school meeting in
December to talk about the
financial situation, some
parents volunteered their
time to work on fund-raising
projects and so the Parents'
Committee to Save Akiva
was created, Mr. Tinman
said.
The committee is sear-
ching for ways to widen the
school's financial base, Mr.
Tinman said. When the
school needs money, officials
continue to go to the same
people who are always will-
ing to give, he said. "It's not
always fair. We must find
more people to support the
school. That's my personal
feeling. We want to see
parents who have energy to
spend on this," said Mr.
Tinman, who has two chil-
dren enrolled in Akiva.
"We're trying to look at
fund-raisers like concerts,
raffles, dinners, art shows or
bingo," he said. He has spent
the past few weeks gather-
ing information on possible
fund raisers.
"There must be some-
thing, some combination,
that will work," he said. El
