FINE ART AUCTION

Ceramic Sculpture
At Swidler Gallery

Ceramic sculpture by Ohio
artists, Roy Cartwright and
Nina Borgia-Aberle will be
featured at Swidler Gallery
Jan. 12-Feb. 9. An opening
reception will be held Jan. 12,
5:30-8:30 p.m. with a slide lec-
ture by Roy Cartwright at 6
p.m. The public is invited.
Roy Cartwright's sculptures
have a concern with, and an
understanding of, natural
forms and endeavor to pay
homage to the vitality of life.
His work is built using pinch
and coil methods, the most
basic of handbuilding pro-
cedures. Mr. Cartwright's
smaller pieces are combina-
tions of individual shapes
linked tgether to create a par-
ticular narrative. His larger
works utilize mosaic. This use
of tiling gives the work a
dappled appearance which
defies its massiveness.
Nina Borgia-Aberle's wall
hung sculptures balance
dualities within the physical,
spiritual, emotional and in-
tellectual aspects of life. Her
physical sources are varied:
tools of labor and domestic
comfort, toys and weapons,
flora and fauna, male and
female anatomy and internal
organs. Ms. Aberle's pieces
are handbuilt primarily with
coils with slip and glaze sur-
face treatment.
Swidler Gallery is at 308
Fourth Street in the
Washington Square Plaza in
downtown Royal Oak. Gallery
hours are Tues.-Fri. 10 a.m.-6
p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m., or by
appointment, 541-8329.

O.K. Harris
New Exhibits

The 1991 exhibition
schedule at O.K. Harris
began Jan. 5 with the open-
ing of paintings in mixed
media by Eugene Brodsky
and miniature, three dimen-
sional environments by Peter
Gabrielse.
Mr. Gabrielse, born in the
Netherlands, grew up in an
18th century house with
parents who were antique
dealers. He has worked in
television and theatre as a
set-designer. He designed his
first box sculptures ten years
ago and refers to his work as
"architecture in miniature."
Mr. Brodsky, born in New
York, continues the abstract
expressionist tradition of
Franz Kline and William
DeKooning, two of the artists
who are especially mean-
ingful to him. His mixed
media, abstract work is mark-
ed by geometric irregular-
ities, tension and variations
in spatial progression.
