oledo, Ohio —
Whenever Reva
Weinberger came
home, her parents went to
Detroit.
It wasn't that Marvin and
Sara Remer didn't want to
see their only daughter.
Their concern was simply
food.
Reva Weinberger, who
lives in Belgium, keeps
kosher. No kosher facilities
were available in her
hometown of Toledo, Ohio.
So every time Mrs.
Weinberger came to visit,
her parents had to drive to
Detroit to get kosher food.
That was all before
Zayde's Place, a new kosher
restaurant Mr. Remer has
opened in Toledo, just off
U.S. 23.
Mr. Remer said his
daughter's need for kosher
food inspired the restaurant,
which opened in July 1990.
The local Orthodox rabbi,
Edward Garsek of Con-
gregation Etz Chayim,
supervises the kashrut of the
facility.
"Reva was coming home
for Chanukah in December
1989," Mr. Remer said. "So
my wife and I were going to
Detroit to get food when we
said, 'That's it. We've had
it.' "
Their original plan was
simply to bring in kosher
meat for Mrs. Weinberger,
her husband and four chil-
dren. But then the Remers
had an idea to open a kosher
restaurant.
After working 34 years
with a steel company, Mr.
Remer had little experience
with the restaurant busi-
ness. His new partner Art
Funka, a Christian who
owns a number of dry-
cleaning establishments,
also was a novice in the
kosher deli/restaurant field.
They hired a cook with ex-
perience and tried recipes at
home. Mr. Remer admits the
two ordered quantities of
meat "by guess and by
golly" those first few mon-
ths.
They came up with a menu
of traditional delicacies in-
cluding corned beef sand-
wiches, stuffed cabbage,
roast brisket and a chicken

soup with matzah balls the
size of a fist. And every
customer finds at his table a
bottomless jar of pickles and
pickled tomatoes.
Rabbi Garsek, a member of
the Detroit Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis, proclaims the
food, "very good, especially
the soups. And people
always enjoy a good corned
beef or pastrami sandwich."
Inside, Zayde's Place is
filled with decorations on
Jewish holidays. A Jewish
National Fund blue box sits
by the cash register. Marvin
Remer, wearing a bright-
blue kepah and a pin
reading, "World's Greatest
Zayde," stops to speak with
customers and asks for a
report on the food.
Located in a strip shopping
center, Zayde's Place at-
tracts both Jewish and non-
