In Ann Arbor
Two chamber music
ensembles, a major sym-
phony orchestra, a national
opera company, and a mask-
mime presentation will corn-
prise the February concerts of
the University Musical Socie-
ty at the University of
Michigan.
The Faculty Artists Concert
will be 4 p.m. Feb. 3 at
Rackham Auditorium, free
admission. The Michigan
Chamber players of the
University of Michigan
School of Music will devote
this concert to the music of
Mozart. The performers will
be violinists Hamao Fujiwara
and Stephen Shipps; pianists
Martin Katz and Arthur
Greene; violists Yizhak
Schotten and Hong-Mei Hiao;
cellist Jerome Jelinek;
soprano Lorna Haywood;
mezzo-soprano Karen Lykes;
baritone Leslie Guinn; and
Fred Ormand and John
Mohler, clarinets/basset
horns.
The Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra with Neeme Jarvi,
conductor and Nadja Salerno-
Sonnenberg, violinist;
Marilyn Mason, organist, will
appear 4 p.m. Feb. 10 at Hill
Auditorium. There is a
charge. This concert marks
Maestro Jarvi's first Ann Ar-
bor appearance as new music
director of the Detroit Sym-
phony. Lawrence Rapchak's
Sinfonia Antigua will be per-
formed during the week of its
world premier; also,
Shostakovich's Violin Concer-
to No. 1, and Saint-Saens'
Symphony No. 3 ("Organ"). A
Philips Pre-Concert Presenta-
tion on the same day by Mark
Volpe, new executive director
of the DSP will begin at 3
p.m. in the Rackham
Building.
The Amsterdam Loeki Star-
dust Quartet will perform 8
p.m. Feb. 11, at Rackham
Auditorium. There is a
charge. This ensemble tours
with 30 Renaissance and
Baroque recorders. The group
will perform music from the
16th through 18th centuries,
including excerpts from the
ing Arts.
