THE JEWISH NEWS

The Lafayette String
Quartet will present an all-
classical concert 3 p.m. Jan.
20 at Oakland University.
The concert will feature
Haydn's Lark Quartet in D
Major and Mozart's Quartet
in A. Also on the program is
Beethoven's Quartet in A Ma-
jor-, which was inspired by
Mozart's Quartet in A.
The concert is the second of
four being held during the
1990-91 season and sponsored
by the Center for the Arts.
Following the concert, the
Friends of the Lafayette
String Quartet will host a
reception to enable the au-
dience to meet the musicians.
They are Ann Elliott-
Goldschmid, violin; Pamela
Highbaugh, cello; Joanna
Hood, viola; and Sharon
Stanis, violin.
Tickets are available from
the Center for the Arts box of-
fice, 370-3013.

'Steel Magnolias'
In Ann Arbor

Steel Magnolias, an Ann Ar-
bor Civic Theatre presenta-
tion, will be performed at the
Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
on Jan. 23-26. Performances
are Wednesday through
Saturday at 8 p.m. Saturday
matinee is at 2 p.m.
For ticket information, call
662-7282.
The action is set in Truvy's
beauty salon in Chinquapin,
La., where all the ladies who
are "anybody" come to have
their hair done. Helped by her
eager new assistant, Annelle,
the outspoken, wisecracking
Truvy dispenses shampoo and
free advice to the sarcastic,
rich Ouiser; the eccentric,
sweet-toothed millionaire,
Miss Clairee; and the local
social leader, M'Lynn whose
daughter, Shelby, is about to
marry a "good ole boy."
M'Lynn is caught between
love and anger when Shelby
decides to risk her life to have
a baby. Strength, love and
purposefulness draw the six
women together as the com-
edy draws to a moving
conclusion.
