Paul D. Borman, president
of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan
Detroit, has issued the follow-
ing statement regarding the
Jan. 7 announcement by the
FBI that it will step up
intelligence-gathering ac-
tivities directed at Iraqis and
other Arab groups in the U.S.:
"While we fully support the
need to maintain domestic
security, we are concerned
that an open-ended govern-
ment plan to interview
leaders of the American
Arabic community may have
a negative impact on the
greater community's percep-
tion of Arab Americans.
"As a community with a
special sensitivity regarding
the protection of civil rights,
the Detroit Jewish communi-
ty urges the FBI to carry out
its necessary investigation in
such a way as to protect the
rights of the Arab American
community."
