prefer chapel to graveside
services. Both rabbis said it
shortens the grieving period
and said the grave is not a
proper place to deliver
eulogies.
"It shortens the period for
the most significant prayer
and can make for an
unspiritual enterprise,"
Rabbi Conrad said. "I am
reluctant to officiate at
graveside only.
"It will be difficult to es-
tablish, but I am all for free
enterprise," Rabbi Conrad
said. ❑

David married Gertrude, a
slim girl with short, curly
hair, John often accom-
panied the Newbergers on
their vacations. In the
1940s, they visited Havana
together.
David became an accoun-
tant and John made a career
as an optometrist. When
David Newberger needed
glasses, he turned to his old
golfing buddy; in turn, Mr.
Newberger prepared John
Eisen's taxes.
In his later years, Mr.
Newberger moved to
Phoenix. Mr. Eisen,
however, was not about to
leave New York. In the
1930s he had found his
dream home at 930 Ogden
Ave. in a Jewish neighbor-
hood in the Bronx. Even
after all the Jews moved out
and his prized car was van-
dalized, Mr. Eisen was de-
termined to stay.
The two men met from
time to time, often to tee off
on the golf course. "We lived
for golf," Mr. Newberger
said.
During one of their
rendezvous, Mr. Eisen told
his friend he had created a
hole in the wall of his New
York office. The hole was
covered by a picture and con-
tained his will, Mr. Eisen
said.
Mr. Newberger attached
little importance to the
statement. "I put it in the
