It was time for more sur-
prises. On behalf of the con-
gregation, Mrs. Teeple and
former temple president Jack
Nolish presented Rabbi Ste-
inger with some special gifts.
For its upcoming 40th an-
niversary, Temple Emanu-El
members will be sponsoring
the writing of a new Torah.
From the contributions
received, an entire sedra will
be written in the rabbi's
honor. He will select the
weekly portion which holds
the most significance for him.
In addition, Rabbi Steinger
was presented with a travel
voucher including a round-
trip ticket plus expenses for
either a trip to Israel or a tour
of the Jewish world of
Eastern Europe.
"For all of the 14-hour days
you've worked, for all of the
family gatherings that were
interrupted because the tem-
ple family needed you, for all
of the extra effort you've put
forth, we thank you," said
Mrs. Teeple.
Accepting his gifts, Rabbi
Steinger acknowledged that
it had been a very moving
and a very touching evening.
"You can tell I was surprised,"
he said. "If I had known
about this, I certainly would
have worn a more brightly
colored tie!"
On a more serious note, he
commented on the impor-
tance of the synagogue, an in-
stitution often deprecated in
today's society. "The best
reason for the synagogue has
been demonstrated here
tonight," he said. "When peo-
ple take part in something
special which extends beyond
themselves, they become part
of something greater than
themselves. Thank you for
letting me participate in that
feeling in this synagogue."
