Campaign Is Facing
Needs Here, Overseas
The official opening event of
the 1991 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign with diplomat-scholar
Dr. Alan Keyes is less than a
week away, and already more
than half the $28.5 million
goal —$16.5 million — has
been pledged.
While the Campaign to
date has raised $500,000
more than last year, the
Jewish Welfare Federation
and its Campaign benefici-
aries face greater challenges
this year as many Jews in
Detroit, overseas and in Israel
meet difficult situations this
winter.
Increased needs are strain-
ing the budgets of local social
service agencies, while they
are being hit by inflation and
government cutbacks. In

Family Service saw a signifi-
cant increase — by nearly half
— in requests for financial
assistance over the same
period last year.
Many of the new clients are
people normally not con-
sidered poor yet are now in
trouble because of the
employment situation. They
are having trouble making
mortgage and rental pay-
ments, as well as providing
for their families' basic needs.
In addition, financial
distress also increases the
number of cases requiring
counseling for problems such
as domestic violence, child
and substance abuse.
Elderly individuals receive
specialized nursing care at
the Jewish Home for Aged's
Borman Hall and Prentis
Manor. Because of the rising
numbers of frail elderly in the
community and the need to
assist those unable to pay all
their expenses, the Jewish
community is needed to step
forward with greater finan-
cial support.
This year, more than 500
Soviet Jews are joining the
1,000 who were reunited with
their families in Detroit.
With the assistance of several
Federation agencies, the new
Americans receive financial
help for rent, food and
clothing. They attended daily
English classes at the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Jewish Com-
munity Center and receive
job assistance through Jewish
Vocational Service.
Meanwhile, the Jewish
Agency for Israel has slashed
its budget and gone into debt
to pay for the massive reset-
tlement in Israel. It had
budgeted for 70,000 new im-
migrants last year, but near-
ly three times that number
have come through Operation
Exodus. Money raised for
Israel provides immigrant
housing, vocational counsel-
ing and job placement.
Around the world, Cam-
paign funds are needed to
maintain a lifeline to even
the smallest Jewish com-
munities. The Joint Distribu-
tion Committee (JDC) and
the Jewish Agency for Israel
are major Campaign
beneficiaries, helping Jews
maintain their religious iden-
tity while providing basic
necessities to Jews in 34 coun-
tries and Israel.
Emergency food shipments
are making the winter a lit-
tle warmer for the Jewish
needy in the Soviet Union
and Eastern Europe. The JDC
answers the cultural and
religious needs of Ethiopian
Jews awaiting transport to
Israel while providing them
with basic necessities.
The aliyah of Soviet and
Ethiopian Jews is occurring
in the midst of severe
economic and military strains
in those countries.
