Parenting Institute
To Be Held Jan. 13

The Agency for Jewish
Education, Temple Shir
Shalom and J.E.F.F. (Jewish
Experiences For Families) are
co-sponsoring a Parenting
Institute.
"The Scary Years: Being a
Parent in the 90s — Raising
Your Own Parental Self-
Esteem" will be held Jan. 13
at Temple Shir Shalom.
Parents will learn of problems
children are exposed to, ways
to, deal with these problems
and the role Judaism can
play. A panel discussion will
be led by Deanne Ginns-
Gruenberg, Rabbi Dannel
Schwartz and Grady
Calloway.
Ms. Ginns-Gruenberg, a
family life educator, is a
registered nurse at Children's
Hospital of Michigan. Rabbi
Dannel Schwartz is the
spiritual leader of Temple
Shir Shalom. Mr. Calloway,
who worked in the Detroit
school system, is an instruc-
tor and department head for
the Cranbrook HUB
program.
Registrations will be taken
at 10 a.m. The panel discus-
sion will be held at 10:30 a.m.
There is no charge.
On Jan. 20, 27 and Feb. 3,
from 10 a.m. to noon at Tem-
ple Shir Shalom, a three-part
program on "The Scary Years:
Being a Parent in the 90s —
Building Your Youth's Self
Esteem" will be facilitated by
Ms. Ginns-Gruenberg. This
seminar is designed to help
parents become aware of the
issues their children are con-
fronting. There is a charge.

Midrasha, Temple
To Present Classes

Temple Emanu-El and the
Midrasha-College of Jewish
Studies are co-sponsoring a
series of courses for the
winter/spring semester of the
Midrasha.
"Introduction to Judaism"
will be taught by Rabbi David
Feder, Rabbi Lane Steinger,
Cantor Norman Rose and
Dottie Dressler of Temple
Emanu-El. This course,
designed for laypersons as
well as candidates for conver-
sion, will present an overview
sketch of the holidays, life cy-
cle events, basic concepts of
liturgy and history of
Judaism. Students will also
be introduced to Hebrew
reading. The course meets on
Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. from
Jan. 17-Mar. 28.
"Don't Say Can't to Torah
Cantilation" will be taught

by Cantor Norman Rose.
Students will be taught to
chant Torah. The course
meets on Mondays at 7 p.m.
from Jan. 21-Feb. 11 and Mar.
4-25. Students may register
for four or eight sessions.
"Understanding the Bible"
will be taught by Rabbi David
Feder. This course will discuss
how Jews have traditionally
viewed the Biblical text
through the layers of rabbinic
commentary. It will meet
Mondays at 8 p.m. from Jan.
21-Feb. 11.
"More Torah through Move-
ment" will be taught by
dance instructor Linda Ste-
inger. This dance course is a
new form of interpreting the
Biblical text through move-
ment activities. This course
meets on Mondays at 7 p.m.
from Jan. 21-Feb. 11 and Mar.
4 and 11.
"All About Israel," taught
by Narda Oz of the Agency for
Jewish Education, will deal
with the land of Israel. Topics
to be discussed include the
establishment of the State of
Israel, its wars, Israel Defense
Forces, treatment of war
casualties, holidays, educa-
tion in Israel and religious
conflict. This course meets on
Mondays at 8 p.m. from Jan.
21-Feb. 11.
All courses meet at Temple
Emanu-El. There is a charge.

Synagogue Plans
Talmud Class

Rabbi Martin Berman of
Congregation Beth Achim
has instituted a beginners
class in Talmud. The class
will be using the Steinsaltz
Hebrew/English edition of the
Talmud. Class meets weekly
on Monday evenings at 8 p.m.
at Beth Achim. There is no
charge. For information, call
Rabbi Berman, 352-8670.
Rabbi Berman's Lunch and
Learn has been moved and
will now meet at the
synagogue on Tuesday from
12:15-1:30 p.m. Lunch is serv-
ed for a nominal fee.

Lecture Series On
Marriage Planned

Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg
of Bais Chabad Torah Center
will lecture on the command-
ment of tefillin as it relates to
the Exodus from Egypt at
8:15 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Torah
Center. For information, call

Bais Chabad of Birming-
ham/Bloomfield plans a
three-part lecture series on
marriage and divorce on
Tuesday nights at the Chabad
Center.
