tcdet fin

aving your restau-
rant included in a
New York Times
listing in New York would
normally throw a
restaurateur into spasms of
delight.
But not always. And cer-
tainly not when you're a
glatt kosher restaurant and
The Times lists your best
dish as linguine with clam
sauce.
"We're a very successful
restaurant," said
restaurateur Pippo Lattanzi.
"We don't want this kind of
confusion."
Mr. Lattanzi is co-owner of
an Italian restaurant on
East 84th Street in
Manhattan that just over a
year ago went glatt kosher,
serving what he described as
"Roman Jewish cooking."
Until recently, it was known
as Trastevere 84.
The problem is that just to
the south on East 83rd
Street is another restaurant
called Trastevere, which is
non-kosher and does serve
linguine with clam sauce.
Such similarity made con-
fusion almost inevitable.
Unfortunately, the confu-
sion reached The Times'
well-read Weekend section
on Oct. 19.
The Times meant to in-
clude the East 83rd Street
Trastevere in its best-dish
list. But it printed the tele-
phone number and address
of Trastevere 84.
"The problem is people

called the operator to ask for
the number and address and
they don't say whether they
want the kosher or non-
kosher restaurant, or which
street it's on," said Mr. Lat-
tanzi, who is not Jewish.
"How can the operator
know?"
To avoid further confusion,
the Union of Orthodox Heb-
rew Congregations, which
supervises kashrut for Mr.
Lattanzi's restaurant, sug-
gested that Trastevere 84
change its name. That's
been done. The eatery's new
name is Travere 84, which
still sounds confusingly
similar.
The Times ran a correction
notice Dec. 15 that explained
the foul up, as well as why it
took so long for the correc-
tion to be printed.
The restaurant writer
responsible for the error has
been on medical leave, the
newspaper reported in its
correction. So although Mr.
Lattanzi and his partners
pointed out the mistake in a
letter sent immediately after
the October article ap-
peared, no one at the paper
noticed the letter for nearly
two months.
Mr. Lattanzi said the best
dishes on his menu are dried
beef with marinaded zuc-
chini and polio alla romana,
which is chicken with red
peppers, onion, oregano and
wine.
He did not say how many
clams they cost.

`Cyrano De Bergerac'
At The DIA Jan. 11-13

The Detroit Institute of
Arts Detroit Film Theatre
(DFT) series will begin its
1991 season Jan. 11, with the
Michigan premier of Cyrano
de Bergerac. The award-
winning new French film will
have an exclusive area
engagement at the DIA on
Jan. 11-13 and 18-20.
Gerard Depardieu stars as
the lovesick Cyrano, the poet
with the big nose whose fear
of rejection permits him to ex-
press his love only through
the voice of another. Mr.
Depardieu received the best
actor prize at the 1990 Can-
nes Film Festival.
Director Jean-Paul Rap-

peneau recruited hundreds of
magnificently costumed ac-
tors for the film's many large-
scale and elaborately design-
ed action sequences. Al-
though the film is massive in
scale, Mr. Rappeneau never
lets his audience forget the
delicate and fragile heart at
the center of Edmond Ros-
tand's classic tale of unre-
quited love.

Friday and Saturday perfor-
mances are at 7 and 9:45 p.m.;
Sunday performances are at
1, 4 and 7 p.m.

For ticket information, call
the DIA Ticket Office,
833-2323.
