The night before anybody knew, Ernie was given two standing ovations at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak. Occasion was the record release party for Thom Sharpe's song to save Tiger Stadium, "Don't Tear It Down" . . . Ernie is heard on it and also on "Baseball," the other tune on the tape writ- ten and sung by Mike Ridley, Mark's brother. His heart may have been breaking with the news Ernie would release the next day, but all he told the 300 or so at the Comedy Castle was how lucky he felt to have had a job that put him so close to his big love, baseball, tells Jewish News staffer Richard Pearl. Then he recited one of his poems to the sport (Ernie says he's a songwriter with "more no-hitters than Nolan Ryan," and left to the tune of his se- cond standing ovation . . . Barrister Alex Bensky, board member of the co-sponsoring Tiger Stadium Fan Club, said sales of club T-shirts and other items raised several hundred dollars for its treasury. Mark said his wife Jackie would have been there but she and partner Gail Jacob of Ridley Cookie Co. were work- ing on their newest contract . . . an exclusive arrangement with Kroger Co. to produce what Mark describes as "fruitcakes for people who don't like fruitcakes." I don't think the Ernie Harwell story is completed yet . . . just have the feeling that there's still more to come . . . and also more than has been told. COCO'S CORNER . . 31005 ORCHARD LAKE RD. L Limit I BEST OF EVERYTHING I "Hail to another loyal to the life of a dog. Howard Schwartz couldn't make it to The Jewish News recent staff holi- day party at Southfield Marriott, and with good reason. He was busy taking a dog obedience class with his and wife Carla's new Puli puppy, Freestyle. Even us Frenchys, poodles that is, know you don't find too many Pulis hanging around the ol' fire hydrant. Those Hungarian sheepdogs are as rare as doggie treats in a breadline. Freestyle must have wagged his tail (that's the way we dogs show we're happy) when complimented as being the best in the class, and that must have sure made Howard mighty glad he went instead of partying with The Jewish News gang . . Only one trouble, Carla says she isn't sure who does the most barking now at home. HERE'S a big hand for the folks of Southfield Marriott, who helped make this one of the best holiday parties held by The Jewish News . . . Ex- cellent service, very good food and all-around congeniality of the hotel employees . . . The Simone Vitale Band was never better . . . five gents and a gal putting out a lot of listenable and danceable rhythms that made the shin- dig flow like good wine. You couldn't ask for a better banquet captain than Henry Price . . . so very attentive, making sure everything went all right . . . Henry was a youngster when Sammy Lieberman had his Blaine Restaurant on 12th Street many years ago . . . but even- tually became part of Sam- my's team at the Raleigh House, plus also working with kosher caterers around town. IF EXPERIENCE has anything to say about success, Mike Cohen (Michael S.), new general manager at Tamaroff Dodge on 12 Mile, should bring a lot of it to the Tamaroff team which he recently joined. All Mike's business life has been in the automobile in- dustry . . . Originally with Ford Motor Company's district sales office in Boston, Mass. . . . then transferred to its Dearborn headquarters in the sales and marketing divi- sion . . . Following 13 years with American Motors at a variety of management levels, Mike in 1985 went to Dexter Chevrolet as general manager . . . and now Tamaroff Dodge has his vast knowledge. Mike's wife, Janice, is a rehabilitation supervisor with Intracorp. FATHER RUSS Kohler is liked by a lot of people . . . not only for his work 'in helping children with terminal diseases, but because he's like "one of the boys" . . . This is why everybody at Excalibur recently donated their time and services . . . chefs, wait- persons, Billy Rose Quartet, barpersons, etc. . . . Marty Wilk didn't just donate the place . . . he also supplied all the food for a sumptuous three-hour holiday cham- pagne brunch to supply cancer kids transportation at the Pope John XXIII Hospitality House . . . Dedicated workers and devotees were there . . . Max- ie Silk, Bill Bonds, Coun- cilman Jack Kelly, Larry Warren and a whole lot more. Helping a guy like Father Russ makes people feel good . . . and proud to be counted. NEW GENERAL mana- ger at Northfield Hilton is Andrew Crocchiolo . . . He takes over for Claudio Nar- dini . . . Northfield Hilton on Crooks at 1-75 in Troy also has a new catering director A save Tiger Stadium group gave Ernie Harwell two ovations the night before his press conference announcing his forced retirement. . . . She's Anne Marie McPhail who replaces Grace White . . . Anne was catering head at Troy Hilton since 1986 and before that cater- ing/sales coordinator for three ( years at Troy Hilton. HERE ARE some reasons given an insurance company by policyholders who offered brief statements regarding their particular accident .. . "The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intention" . . . "I thought my window was down, but found it was up when I put my hand through it" . . . "A pedestrian hit me and went under my car" .. . "The guy was all over the place. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him" . . . "I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law and headed over the embankment" .. . "The accident occurred when I was attempting to bring my car out of a skid by steering it into the other vehi- cle" . . . "I was driving my car out of the driveway in the usual manner, when it was struck by the other car in the same place it had been struck several times before" . . . "I was on my way to the doctor's
