What To Do
If Locked Out

You worry about someone
else breaking into your car
and then it happens: you lock
yourself out. Unless your car
is an American-made model
manufactured before 1979,
the old coathanger in the win-
dow trick won't work. In fact,
you may end up breaking
your window. That will make
you ever madder than you
already are and it will cost
plenty.
If you get locked out, don't
panic. First, look through
your purse, pockets or in the
house for another key. Then,
check all the doors on the
chance you may have left one
unlocked. Then, head for the
nearest gas station. Often, a
mechanic will have a device
that can be used to open a car
door with little or minimal
damage.
Your best bet is your auto
club. They will come to your
aid if you're willing to wait 30
to 60 minutes, weather per-
mitting. On most car keys,
there is a code number and it
will help the auto club people
if you know that number.
Write it on the back of your
driver's license for easy
retrieval.
You can call a locksmith to
assist you. But be prepared to
pay for his services, about $25
to $150, depending on the
complexity of the job. The
local police may help
although they may refer you
to a local locksmith.
The most sensible tip is:
think ahead. Make sure a
spare key is in a safe place.
Magnetic "hide-a-key" cases
that you can affix to the
underside of a bumper cost a
couple bucks and are well
worth it should you lock-out
on a rainy night.

Black Wears Better

manufacturer introduced a
new model featuring cord con-
struction in the carcass,
which promised greater
strength. To distinguish it
from white tires, carbon black
was put into the tread stock
for coloring. The black rubber
wore better and gripped the
road better.

Cop Talk

What should you do if a
policeman pulls you over? Re-
main seated with the seat
belt buckled. Don't reach for
the registration and driver's
license until you are asked for
them. Keep your hands in
sight at all times.
