performance 300/500SL cars
for our top image. There's
nothing classier than a sports
car that features normally
hidden roll bars that
automatically pop up if sen-
sors determine a rollover is
imminent.
There's a 300SL in the
garage of our car enthusiast,
Ferris Haddad who has a
500SL on order.
Martha Reeves' second car
is a 1973 Mercedes Benz. She
bought it while working in

was happening. Janis Joplin

Ferris Haddad has a
quadruple image, with four
from our list: Mercedes,
Lexus, BMW and Porsche. His
pet is his Porsche 911SC with
a low-slung turbo body.
"I like to get the very best,
and for years I wanted a
Porsche," he says. "I drive it
only when weather is
flawless. I don't want to risk
injuring that beautiful paint
job. It's a mid-engine car not
made to be driven on icy roads
and snow. But there's
something about a Porsche."
What it's about are superior
speed and performance. This
year's reincarnated version of
the 911 Turbo 6 ($95,000), for
instance, is powered by a 3.3
liter engine that rates 315
horsepower, a tire-burning
4.8-second time from zero to
60, and top speed of 168 mph.
Our image choice is Porc-
she 928 GT V-8 ($77,500).
Judie Sherman likes her
Porsche mostly because "It's
fun! I don't know what I
would do at a light without
being able to make it go
vroom vroom."

The Runners-Up
On The Image List
A lot of other impressive
cars are edging toward the
"Top Ten" list. But in our opi-
nion, they haven't yet achiev-
ed that totally positive image
that surrounds the person
who drives one, or they are
available in such small
numbers that they have little
significance.
Our runners-up choices in-
clude Nissan's new luxury
car, Infiniti Q45 ($39,000) and
the sporty Chevy Camaro
and Pontiac Firebird. We
can't leave out Range Rover
($42,000), British-built
sport/utility with permanent
four-wheel-drive. What better
image than to drive the vehi-
cle Her Majesty Elizabeth II
sometimes uses for
ceremonial parades and
reviewing her troops!
In the sports car category,
five recent entries are in hot
pursuit of places on our list:
Acura NSX (most likely to
succeed), Dodge Stealth and
its twin, Mitsubishi 3000GT,
Nissan 300ZX, and Toyota
MR2. The latter four have
even hotter turbo versions.
We also applaud the image-
making of the Swedes with
Volvo (Detroit Free Press
society editor Marj Jackson
Levin drives their station
wagon), and Saab (Elmore
Leonard, best-selling author,
drives one).
And who wouldn't want to
upgrade an image at the
wheel of an exotic vehicle like
Lamborghini Diablo, Ferrari
Testerossa, or a Lotus Esprit
Turbo SE race car replica?
For the ultimate, we
nominate the very upper
crust British Rolls Royce or
Bentley. Prices start at
$118,700, but the Corniche
($220,000) best suits our
image.
