An Artist's Affair
With The Automobile

CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ

rtist Tom Hale
focuses on the
automobile as a work
of art. "I'm trying to use the
car as a canvas,"said Mr.
Hale.
The 1941 Buick, on our
cover, is a photo of a 30 X 40
acrylic painting that epit-
omizes Mr. Hale's
philosophy. He uses the
sheet metal of the auto as a
canvas and creates a pain-
ting keeping the integrity of
the automobile while explor-
ing color and reflection.
Mr. Hale became fas-
cinated with automobiles as
a youth. Since he always en-
joyed sketching cars, it was
natural for him to attend
and graduate from the Art
Center School in Los
Angeles.
He began his artistic ca-
reer as a designer of future
cars working for Chrysler,
General Motors and Ameri-
can Motors. As much as he
loved his job, he became
frustrated as an artist in a
traditional setting and
began to paint. That sense of
freedom became an attrac-
tion and Mr. Hale left his

he most important fac-
tor in winter driving is
traction. It always
makes me shudder when I see
those four-wheel-drive cars
and trucks flying past slower
traffic on a snowy or icy
street.
The drivers assume that
because they've got enough
traction to go, they've got
enough to stop, too. And that's
not necessarily so. There are
really only two rules for stay-
ing safe when traction is bad:
• Slow down.
• Allow plenty of room to
stop.
Just do those two things,
and you'll be home in time for
dinner.
There's one other rule you
should follow that will keep
your car happier. For the sake
of your transmission and your
bank account, make a resolu-
tion that this winter you will
never indulge in the
emotionally-satisfying but

secure twenty year career in
1985 to puriue painting on a
full-time basis.
Today Mr. Hale is a mem-
ber of the American Water-
color Society. His painting of
a 1932 Duesenberg was the
winner of America's
prestigious watercolor
award, the Gold Medal of
Honor, in the American
Watercolor Society's 113th
Annual Exhibition in New
York.
His works are displayed in
many corporate and private
collections throughout the
world. When Lee Iacocca
traveled to China in 1988, he
presented Premier Li Peng
with a Tom Hale painting of
1962 Chrysler Imperial.
Mr. Hale constantly
struggles with the accep-
tance of automobile painting
as fine art. "If I were pain-
ting flowers, no one would
question its legitimacy." He
talks about the excitement
in his work. "You can take it
to a higher level than just a
picture of a car." ❑

destructive practice of spinn-
ing the wheels when you're
stuck in the snow. Particular-
ly you must not do this while
rocking the car back and
forth.
The only way you'll get the
car out of that snowbank is by
not spinning the wheels. If
you're to have any hope of
freeing yourself, you have to
keep the wheels in contact
with the ground. And you
have no idea how your
transmission screams when
you slam the poor thing back
and forth. People who do that
are the best thing that ever
happened to transmission
mechanics, I promise.

Sales of imported cars have
been declining, but that
doesn't mean American-made
cars are gaining popularity.
Instead, sales of Japanese-
label cars assembled in the
United States are expected to
double in the next five years.
