`Seeking Ancient Legends' by Fran Larsen.

Southwest Paintings
At Rubiner Gallery

Fran and Hal Larsen are
showing new paintings of the
Southwest at the Rubiner
Gallery through Jan. 10.
Well-known ex-Michigan-
ders, the Larsens lived and
worked for many years in the
Saugatuck area, painting the
scenes of Lake Michigan
shorelines and landscape.
They moved to Sante Fe ten
years ago an have embraced
the colors, visions, and
folklore of the Southwest. The
results are spectacular, color-
ful paintings.
Fran Larsen works ex-
clusively in watercolor, com-
bining the symbols and tradi-
tions of the Indian culture
with her personal experiences
and iconography. She carves
and paints the elaborate
frames which surround the
paintings and often adds car-
vings on top which repeat the
main theme. The paintings

have a happy, humorous
quality.
Hal Larsen works in both
watercolor and acrylics, and
the symbolism in this show
reflects his fascination and
love for the culture and colors
of the American Southwest
and the Native American in-
habitants. There are several
paintings of Indians, their
faces covered to reflect their
need for privacy. The land-
scapes are large and
abstracted, hinging at the
various strata of the earth,
and stressing the constant
blue sky and bright, sunlit
cliffs and canyons that are in-
dicative of the area.
Gallery Hours are 11 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Tuesday through
Saturday.
