Ethiopians
Not Agunas
Jerusalem (JTA) — A com-
bination of halachic inter-
pretation and exhaustive de-
tective work has released 14
Ethiopian Jewish women
from the limbo status of
aguna.
An aguna is a woman
deserted by her husband but
not divorced. According to
religious law, she may never
remarry.
The Ethiopian women who
arrived here several years
ago without their husbands
found themselves in that
category.
The government estab-
lished a special belt din —
religious court — for the
purpose of locating their
husbands and obtaining a
get, or religious divorce.

warm mineral water (kept at
a steady 108 degrees) are
used to heat the bathhouse
complex. There are also
water slides (fed by a natural
hot spring), high-powered
jets for a body massage in
the water and a health club.
Hammat Gader workers
vow that after only moments
in the therapeutic water —
which include a hot, cold and
and tepid-water pool —
everything from aching
joints to tense muscles will
simply wash away.
Most visitors come for
several weeks to the resort,
but there are a number of
regular residents at
Hammat Gadar.
Alligators.
The creatures lived at the
Hammat Gadar Alligator
Farm, which includes a Rep-
tilarium, where baby
alligators are raised. They
don't greet visitors in the hot
springs, but the alligators
are always delighted to
receive any complaints
about the facilities. ❑
One of its members, Rabbi
Yisrael Yifrach, announced
in mid-December success in
all 14 cases.
He traveled to Addis
Ababa, the Ethiopian capi-
tal, on behalf of the court
and located all of the
husbands. He received from
each a written authorization
to deliver a get to their
wives.
Religious Affairs Minister
Avner Shaki hailed the
success and announced his
ministry would seek the
creation of another special
belt din to deal with the per-
sonal status problems of
Soviet immigrants.
