PASSOVER 7997 AT THE Diplomat RESORT AND COUNTRY CLUB HOLLYWOOD, FLA. MARCH 29 — APRI I_ 6 Tiberias: "The hot springs are more than just hot; they cure." tients with osteoarthrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, ar- thropathia psoriatica, cer- vical and lumbar syndrome, soft-tissue rheumatism and diseases of neurogenic origin. The kibbutz has charted great success in treating psoriasis; studies show that about 85 percent of those with the disease find it cleared or show significant improvement after regular treatment. The length of remission varies from one month to a year. Treatment for most diseases includes regular immersion in the Dead Sea and sunbathing (with no sunburn, thanks to the area's high atmospheric pressure, which filters harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun). Cleopatra was a regular visitor to the Dead Sea, but King Herod favored Tiberias, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. King Herod was so fond of Tiberias, in fact, that he built large, elegant facilities where he hoped the mineral water's curative powers would help his old-age pains. Many Jewish sages also visited the area until the fourth century, according to the Talmud. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, an author of the Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical writings, blessed the Tiberias waters after they cleared his skin diseases. Maimonides, the 12th century Jewish philosopher and physician, often sent his patients to the hot springs. Treatment at the Tiberias Hot Springs mainly caters to those sufferings joint ailments resulting from traumatic injury or rheu- matic disease. In addition to water therapy, massage and reflexology are available at the resort. And yes, there is mud. The mud at the Tiberias Hot Springs is not the mud sitting in the back yards of West Bloomfield or Oak Park residents. That's plain old mud. The Tiberias mud is mud and then some. The therapeutic Tiberias mud, which comes from a tributary of the Jordan River, contains tiny par- ticles of salt and minerals. When applied in plasters, it has been shown helpful in the treatment of joints damaged by rheumatism or in accidents. And for the busy executive in prime health but in- variably overworked, the Tiberias Hot Springs offers a whirlbath filled with miner- al waters and underwater massage. Workers promise the treatment will relax any would-be capitalist who can't seem to part from his beloved briefcase. One busy official who made regular visits to Tiberias was Israel's first prime minister, David Ben- Gurion. Mr. Ben-Gurion, who during his treatments stayed at a modest hotel overlooking the Sea of Galilee, said of the Tiberias Hot Springs, "They are more than just hot; they cure." Israel's third health resort, Hammat Gader, is about 11 miles from Tiberias. Located on the Syrian-African Rift, the site of past volcanic eruptions, Hammat Gader's mineral pools are housed beside 2,000-year-old Roman baths. In the second century, Hammat Gader (the Hot Springs of Gadar) was a spa of international reputation. Men and women from throughout the Roman world came to the baths, which included seven grand pools and a hall of fountains, where marble human and animal heads spouted cool water.
