ipstick? Who needs it?
Foundation? Throw it
out. Mascara? No way!
What woman would
possibly want any of these
boring, overpriced cosmetics
when she can just as easily
cover her face with
refreshing, delightful, ex-
quisite and irresistible mud?
That's right, mud.
Touted as the beauty
secret of the Middle East,
mud is available as a mask
for the face or body at nu-
merous health spas for men
and women in Israel. It's
said to be therapeutic, and
visitors to the resorts
regularly rub it all over
their skin and hair.
Israel's spas are not just
for the lifestyles of the rich
and famous; dirt does come
cheap at many of these lux-
urious hideaways, where a
mud mask costs just a few
dollars and a two-week stay
— including room, board and
treatment — costs several
hundred dollars.
One of Israel's most pop-
ular health resorts is the Ein
Gedi Hot Springs at the
Dead Sea. Here, the mud is
rich and black and available
straight from the sea or in a
large, square vat near the
water's edge.
Physicians swear by the
natural healing properties of
the area, which boasts the
highest concentration of ox-
ygen in the world. The hot
springs are warm and
replete with sulphur and
other minerals (which ex-
plains that unforgettable
aroma, eau de bad eggs), and
the climate is constantly
pleasant.
Dr. Joseph Horowitz,
medical director at the
Clinic for Rheumatic
Diseases in EM Gedi, says
the area's mild climate is
ideal for rheumatic patients,
while the high level of ox-
ygen can benefit those with
respiratory problems or suf-
fering with allergies.
In addition to its incom-
parable mud, the Dead Sea
contains the world's largest
bromine deposit and a
high concentration of
magnesium. These minerals
may sound as familiar as 9th
grade chemistry class, but
Dr. Horowitz says the
magnesium and bromine
offer valuable treatment to
the ailing and weary.
Bromine reportedly can
ease tense nerves, while
magnesium has been shown
to help prevent arterio-
sclerosis.
Programs at the Ein Gedi
Spa are available for pa-
