Scrolls Editor
Fired For Attack

New York (JTA) — After
attacking Jews, Judaism
and Israel in a newspaper
article, the chief editor of the
Dead Sea Scrolls has been
dismissed from his post.
Dr. John Strugnell of the
Harvard Divinity School had
also been accused of delay-
ing publication of the an-
cient manuscripts and re-
stricting access to them.
He was dismissed in
December by a team of the
manuscripts' editors after
being quoted in the Israeli
daily Ha'aretz as saying
"Judaism is originally
racist" and that "the correct
answer of Jews to Chris-
tianity is to become Chris-
tian."
Mr. Strugnell, a Roman
Catholic, said in the article
that Judaism "is a horrible
religion. It's a Christian
heresy." He also said that
"the occupation of Jerusalem
— and maybe of the whole
State (of Israel) — is founded
on a lie."
A member of the editorial
team that dismissed Mr.
Strugnell said he was
removed because of his
"declining general health,
especially for the last month
or so." But other editors,
quoted in the New York
Times, said Mr. Strugnell
had a "drinking problem"
and "mental condition."
The Ha'aretz article, by
Avi Katzman, was published
Nov. 9. It will be reprinted in
English in the January issue
of Biblical Archaeology Re-

view.

Agency Chief
Sees Danger

Bonn (JTA) — The head of
a German security agency
has warned that "extremely
dangerous" elements of the
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization remain in what was
formerly East Germany, and
that they could well resort to
violence in support of Iraq in
the Persian Gulf crisis.
Gerhard Boden, chief
of the Bundesverfasshungs-
schultz, Germany's FBI, ex-
pressed these views Dec. 11 in
an interview published i the
Dresdener Morgenpost, the
newspaper of Dresden, a city
in what* was formerly East
Germany.
"We know that dozens of
Palestinians are still in the
new federal states," Mr.
Boden said, referring to the
East German territory that
has been part of a single
Germany since unification
Oct. 3.
