Reports Israelis'
`New Hatred'
One of the most chilling
accounts of the mood in
Israel appeared last week in
the New Yorker.
Written by Israeli jour-
nalist Amos Elon, it said
"many people here now have
a sinking feeling of being at
the mercy of blind forces"
because their country lacks
"any discernible effort to
negotiate a political set-
tlement to the Arab-Israeli
conflict."
And Jerusalem, he says,
"now often resembles an
armed camp. The Israeli sec-
tor and the Palestinian sec-
tor in the 'united' city are
held together by brute force
alone . . . "
"The intense hatred is
new," writes Mr. Elon, "and
its effects on public morals
are considerable. The ge-
nerations of young Israelis
who went to war in the past
were grim and determined,
but without hatred. Now
there is hatred and disdain,
too, and the kind of 'war
racism' that is apparent
when bystanders trying to
stop a beating yell, 'He is not
an Arab — don't hit
him.' "

Judaica Sold
In Holland
Amsterdam (JTA) — A
15th-century miniature dai-
ly prayerbook manuscript
from northern Italy was sold
for 340,000 guilders
($193,000), the highest price
fetched by any of the several
hundred items of rare
Judaica auctioned here in
mid-December by Christie's.
It had belonged to an
unnamed collector from Nor-
th America.
Another manuscript, a
lavishly decorated mid-17th-
century ketubah, drew a top
bid of nearly $60,000, con-
siderably more than ex-
pected.
