War Crimes
Legislation

Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
Australia's hotly contested
war-crimes legislation was
further complicated last
week when a retiring Jewish
senator introduced an
amendment that would vast-
ly broaden its scope.
Sen. Peter Baume of the
Liberal Party, before offi-
cially retiring on Dec. 21,
moved that the law which
allows Australian courts to
prosecute Nazi war
criminals residing in
Australia be expanded to
cover any war criminals
from any part of the world.
The constitutionality of
the War Crimes Act is cur-
rently being challenged
before Australia's High
Court.
The amendment offered by
Mr. Baume got him in trou-
ble with his party. For one
thing, it could conceivably
lead to charges against
Australians involved in the
Pacific war against Japan.
But the senator, who was
the last Jewish member of
either house of parliament,
argued that the act should
be expanded to cover people
who "gave the orders" for
atrocities such as the
"massacres in Kampuchea
(Cambodia) and South
America."

'Advocate'
Sold To Rabbi

Boston (JTA) — Ira Korff,
a lawyer and businessman
who is also an ordained
rabbi has purchased the
Jewish Advocate of Boston,
the largest Jewish news-
paper in New England, from
the family that has run it for
the past 73 years.
Rabbi Korff, 41, who is
president of National
Amusements of Dedham,
Mass., will take over as
publisher, it was announced
by Bernard Hyatt, the outgo-
ing editor-publisher, who
will stay on as editor of the
weekly founded in 1902. Mr.
Hyatt said the change would
"set the stage for the next
generation of the Advocate's
growth and assure its
strength and vitality in the
future."
Rabbi Korff, a native
Bostonian, is a descendant of
the Baal Shem Tov, the 18th
century founder of
Chasidism, and the grandson
of the late dean of the Or-
thodox rabbinate, Grand
Rabbi Jacob Korff.
The Jewish Advocate was
founded 88 years ago by
Jacob de Haas.
