A workaholic, and a
stickler for accuracy and
detail, Mr. Shocken trained
generations of Israel's most
talented journalists.
A word of praise was rare
from him, Ha'aretz's top
columnist Joel Markus
recalled. Excellence was
taken for granted.
Editorially, Ha'aretz took
a liberal, dovish line. Mr.
Shocken was at odds with
the policies of the right-wing
Likud-led government and
made no secret that he
despaired of the direction
the country was taking.
A few days before his
death, he summoned Mr.
Markus and several other
senior staff people along
with his son Amos, manag-
ing director of Ha'aretz and
other publications owned by
the family.
He urged them to guard
the unique contribution the
newspaper made to Israeli
society as a watchdog, sen-
tinel and protector of stan-
dards.

Ha'aretz Editor
Shocken Dies
At Age Of 78
Jerusalem (JTA) — Ger-
shom Shocken, whose 51
years as editor of Ha'aretz
made him one of the longest
serving newspaper editors in
the democratic world, died
Dec.22 of cancer at the age of
78 and was buried the next
day in Tel Aviv.
His funeral was attended
by many of the country's
most prominent figures in
politics, literature, the arts
and the news media.
Mr. Shocken, born and
raised in Germany, came to
Palestine before World War
II. His father, Zalman
Shocken, a shopowner and
publisher, bought Ha'aretz
in the early 1930s.
The younger Shocken took
it over in 1939 and built it
from a relatively obscure lit-
erary journal to recognition
as Israel's leading daily. It is
one of the most respected
and oft-quoted newspapers

New York (JTA) — Thirty-
seven Jews from Albania,
Eastern Europe's last re-
maining Communist
stronghold, arrived in Italy
last week and are awaiting
resettlement in the United
States.
The emigres, all members
of one family, are among the
first in what is expected to
be a mass migration of the
country's tiny Jewish com-
munity, estimated to
number anywhere between
500 and 1,000 people, accor-
ding to officials involved.
Officials said a few
families are already in Israel,
but it is unclear when they
arrived as part of
"Operation Flying Carpet,"
as the emigration of Alba-
nian Jews is being called.
The departure of Jews
from Albania, whose people
remained in virtual isolation
for decades under the
Stalinist rule of Enver Hox-
ha, comes as the country is
taking tentative steps
toward establishing an open
system.
Exit visas for the Jews
were obtained after months
of quiet negotiations bet-
ween Israel and Albania
with the help of the Italian
government, said an official
connected with the emigra-
tion.
